Chapter 13 - THE TRUTH MY GRANDFATHER HID

After my father survived the attack, he finally agreed to tell the truth.
Not because he wanted forgiveness.
Because he was afraid.
He sat in the hospital bed, looking smaller than I had ever seen him.
âEmilyâŠâ
I stood at the doorway.
âI need answers.â
He nodded.
âYou deserve them.â
For the first time in years, he wasnât defending himself.
He was just a broken man.
âYour grandfather knew Margaret was dangerous.â
I listened.
âHe discovered she had been changing financial records.â
âWhy didnât he stop her?â
âHe tried.â
My father looked down.
âBut Margaret threatened to expose secrets.â
âWhat secrets?â
His eyes filled with shame.
âFamily secrets.â
I waited.
Finally he said:
âYour grandfather had another child.â
I froze.
âWhat?â
âA daughter.â
My heart raced.
âWho?â
My father looked at me.
âMargaret.â
The room went silent.
I understood.
She wasnât just angry.
She believed she had been abandoned.
âShe thought he chose me over her.â
âYes.â
âBut why?â
My father sighed.
âBecause your grandfather believed she was dangerous.â
I looked away.
A terrible childhood.
A terrible past.
None of it excused what she did.
Then my father whispered:
âShe blamed you because you represented everything she lost.â
My eyes filled with tears.
âI was a child.â
âI know.â
That was the first time my father admitted it.
âI failed you.â
I didnât forgive him.
Not yet.
But I heard him.
Then Detective Harris entered.
âWe found Margaret.â
Everyone turned.
âWhere?â
He looked at me.
âAt the old family estate.â
The same house where my grandfather created the trust.
The same place where all of this started.
And Margaret had left one message.
âShe wants Emily to come alone.â
Daniel immediately shook his head.
âAbsolutely not.â
But I knew.
This had to end.
I looked at him.
âIâm going.â
âNo.â
âDaniel.â
He stopped.
âI need to face her.â
He held my hand.
âThen Iâm coming with you.â
May you like
And for the first time in weeksâŠ
I felt ready.
