Chapter 2 - THE SECRET BEHIND THE TRUST

The hospital lights were too bright.
That was the first thing I noticed.
The second thing was Danielâs hand wrapped around mine.
He hadnât let go since we arrived.
The doctors moved quickly.
Machines surrounded me.
Questions came from every direction.
âWhen did the pain start?â
âDid you fall directly on your stomach?â
âDid someone push you?â
That last question made the room quiet.
I looked at Daniel.
He looked back at me.
Then I answered.
âYes.â
The nurseâs expression changed.
âWho?â
I closed my eyes.
I didnât want to say her name.
Because saying it made it real.
âMy sister.â
The doctor continued examining me while Daniel stepped into the hallway to speak with the police.
I could hear his voice through the door.
âShe attacked my wife intentionally.â
âNo, it wasnât an argument that got out of hand.â
âYes, there is video evidence.â
For the first time in hours, I felt like someone believed me.
But then my phone started ringing.
My mother.
I stared at the screen.
Daniel walked back inside.
âDonât answer.â
I looked at him.
âSheâs my mother.â
âShe chose Rachel before she chose you.â
That hurt because I knew he was right.
I answered.
âEmilyâŠâ
My motherâs voice sounded broken.
âPlease donât destroy this family.â
I almost laughed.
âMom, Rachel kicked me.â
âShe didnât meanââ
âShe kicked my stomach.â
Silence.
Then my mother whispered:
âYou know how emotional she gets.â
I felt something inside me break.
âEmotional?â
âYes.â
âShe could have killed my baby.â
My mother didnât answer.
And that silence told me everything.
Daniel took the phone from my hand.
âThis conversation is over.â
He ended the call.
Then he showed me something on his phone.
A photo.
The inheritance documents.
The same ones my mother had taken.
âWhat is this?â
Daniel sat beside me.
âYour grandfatherâs trust agreement.â
I stared at the paper.
My grandfather had created a trust before he died.
A trust that would transfer to my child after birth.
But there was one condition.
My daughter had to be born alive.
My stomach dropped.
âDanielâŠâ
He nodded.
âI know.â
Neither of us spoke.
Because we both understood.
If my baby didnât surviveâŠ
The trust wouldnât go to her.
It would go to the next beneficiary.
Rachel.
My sister.
The room suddenly felt freezing cold.
Rachel didnât attack me because she was angry.
She attacked me because my daughter was standing between her and millions of dollars.
Then Danielâs phone rang.
It was the detective.
His face changed as he listened.
âWhat?â
A pause.
Then:
âYouâre sure?â
He looked at me.
âSomeone tried to delete Tylerâs video.â
My heart stopped.
âWho?â
Daniel slowly lowered the phone.
âThe person who triedâŠâ
May you like
He looked terrified.
âIt was someone inside this hospital.â
