Chapter 3 - THE PERSON WHO TRIED TO ERASE THE TRUTH

The detective’s words kept repeating in my head.

“Someone inside this hospital tried to delete the video.”

I stared at Daniel.

“Who was it?”

He didn’t answer immediately.

And that scared me more than anything.

Because Daniel was never afraid.

Not when his company almost collapsed.

Not when we lost our first pregnancy.

Not even when doctors told us this pregnancy would be difficult.

But now

He looked worried.

“Daniel.”

He sat beside me and took my hand.

“The detective is checking the security cameras.”

“That doesn’t answer my question.”

He looked away.

“I don’t know yet.”

But I knew him.

And I knew when he was hiding something.

“You think it was my family.”

His silence was the answer.

I turned my face toward the window.

Outside, the city lights continued like nothing had happened.

People were driving home.

Families were eating dinner.

Children were laughing.

And my family was fighting over whether my unborn daughter deserved to live.

The thought made me sick.

A few minutes later, the doctor came back.

“Emily, we have good news.”

I immediately sat up.

“The baby?”

“She’s stable.”

A wave of relief hit me so hard that tears filled my eyes.

“She moved?”

The doctor smiled.

“Yes. She’s a fighter.”

I closed my eyes.

Thank God.

But then the doctor’s expression became serious.

“However, we need to monitor you closely.”

“Why?”

“There are signs that this may not have been a simple fall.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“What do you mean?”

The doctor lowered his voice.

“Your injuries suggest a significant amount of force.”

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone in that room knew what that meant.

My sister didn’t accidentally hurt me.

She attacked me.

After the doctor left, Daniel sat down.

“We need to talk about Rachel.”

I already knew.

“What about her?”

“The police found something.”

My heart sank.

“What?”

He opened his phone.

A message thread appeared.

It was between Rachel and someone saved as “Attorney.”

My hands started shaking.

The messages were from three weeks earlier.

Rachel had asked about the trust.

She had asked what would happen if my baby was never born.

And the attorney had responded:

“The inheritance would transfer to the alternate beneficiary.”

Rachel.

I covered my mouth.

“No
”

Daniel squeezed my shoulder.

“There’s more.”

I looked at him.

“She knew the exact deadline.”

“What deadline?”

“The day your pregnancy reached the final stage where the trust would become permanent.”

My blood ran cold.

Rachel wasn’t acting out of jealousy.

She had been counting days.

Planning.

Waiting.

Then Daniel received another message from the detective.

His face changed.

“What?”

I immediately noticed.

“What happened?”

He slowly looked up.

“The police found Rachel’s car.”

“And?”

“There was a folder inside.”

“What kind of folder?”

Daniel swallowed.

“Medical information about your pregnancy.”

The room went silent.

May you like

Because Rachel didn’t just know about the trust.

She knew everything about my baby.
