Chapter 5 - THE TRUTH UNDER THE BRACE

Dominic drove to the private rehabilitation center.

For the first time in months…

He didn’t feel weak.

He felt awake.

Mercer was waiting inside.

Alone.

“You came.”

Dominic closed the door.

“Yes.”

Mercer looked exhausted.

“I knew this day would come.”

Dominic stared.

“How long?”

The doctor looked away.

“Six weeks.”

Dominic’s expression hardened.

“You knew?”

“I suspected.”

“You suspected someone was damaging my recovery.”

“Yes.”

“And you said nothing?”

Mercer closed his eyes.

“I was scared.”

That answer surprised Dominic.

Because fear was something Dominic understood.

Everyone had fear.

The difference was what people did with it.

“Arthur threatened you.”

Mercer looked up.

“My family.”

Silence.

“He said if I spoke, my daughter would lose her scholarship. My wife would lose her job.”

Dominic’s hands tightened.

“Where is Arthur now?”

Mercer didn’t answer.

That was when Dominic knew.

Something was wrong.

“Samuel.”

The doctor whispered:

“He’s going after Ellie.”

Everything stopped.

Dominic stood.

The pain in his leg didn’t matter.

Nothing mattered.

“Why?”

Mercer looked terrified.

“Because she saw everything.”

Dominic grabbed his coat.

Vincent entered.

“Boss?”

Dominic looked at him.

“Get every man we have.”

“What happened?”

Dominic’s voice became cold.

“Arthur made one mistake.”

“What?”

“He forgot the smallest person in the room was the one watching.”

They rushed back toward the estate.

But when Dominic arrived…

The front door was open.

The guards were unconscious.

And on the marble floor…

Was Ellie’s wooden toy.

Broken.

Dominic picked it up.

His face changed.

Because attached to the toy was a small piece of paper.

Three words.

YOU WERE TOO LATE.
