Chapter 13 - THE MAN WHO KNEW EVERYTHING

The emergency lights turned on.

A weak red glow filled the room.

Standing near the entrance was David Cross.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

Dominic stared.

“You were supposed to be unconscious.”

David gave a small smile.

“That was the story.”

Vincent immediately moved forward.

“Stay where you are.”

David raised his hands.

“I’m not here to fight.”

Dominic studied him.

“Then why are you here?”

David looked at Arthur.

“To finish what I started.”

Arthur’s expression became cold.

“You should have stayed hidden.”

David laughed.

“I tried.”

He looked at Dominic.

“But your enemy kept making mistakes.”

David explained everything.

The accident.

The hidden company.

The stolen money.

The plan to remove Dominic.

But there was one more thing.

The reason Arthur needed Dominic gone immediately.

“He wasn’t after your company.”

Dominic frowned.

“Then what?”

David looked at him.

“He was after something your father left behind.”

Dominic froze.

“My father?”

Years ago, before Dominic built his empire, his father kept private records.

Documents.

Names.

Evidence.

Information that could destroy powerful people.

Arthur wanted those records.

“Where are they?”

David looked at Ellie.

Everyone followed his eyes.

The little girl was holding her wooden toy.

David smiled.

“That toy.”

Clare looked confused.

“What?”

David pointed.

“Your daughter found the same thing everyone ignored.”

Dominic picked up the broken toy.

“What does it have to do with my father?”

David answered:

“The original lock design came from your father’s old security system.”

Dominic stared.

The small toy.

The little mechanism.

The thing Ellie loved.

It wasn’t just a toy.

It was a clue.

Arthur suddenly moved.

Fast.

Too fast.

He grabbed the folder from the table.

“Enough.”

Vincent reacted.

But Arthur was already running.

Dominic watched him disappear through the hallway.

Then he looked down at Ellie.

The girl who started everything.

“Can you open it?”

Ellie looked at the broken toy.

Then nodded.

“Yes.”

Everyone waited.

The four-year-old girl touched the hidden mechanism.

Click.

A small compartment opened.

Inside was a tiny memory card.

Dominic stared.

Because he finally understood.

The truth had been hidden in the smallest place possible.

And Arthur had spent years searching everywhere else.
