Chapter 1 - THE GIRL WHO FOUND THE LIE

“Don’t sign those papers.”

Dominic Vale looked up.

The voice didn’t come from one of his lawyers.

It didn’t come from one of his executives.

It came from a four-year-old girl standing beside his damaged leg.

And somehow, that frightened him more than anything else that had happened in the last three months.

The room went silent.

Dominic’s cane rested against the marble floor.

Behind him, six powerful men waited inside the glass conference room.

They had come prepared.

The documents were already printed.

The pens were already placed on the table.

Everyone knew why they were there.

Tonight was supposed to be the night Dominic Vale finally admitted he was no longer the man he used to be.

But a little girl had just stopped everything.

“Ellie.”

Clare Rowan’s voice trembled.

She rushed forward and grabbed her daughter’s hand.

“I’m sorry, Mr. Vale. She doesn’t understand.”

Dominic didn’t answer.

His eyes stayed on Ellie.

The little girl looked nervous, but she didn’t look afraid.

That was unusual.

Most adults couldn’t stand being in the same room with Dominic when he was angry.

Ellie was staring at something completely different.

His leg brace.

“Why did you say that?” Dominic asked.

Clare immediately shook her head.

“She’s just playing.”

Dominic slowly turned toward her.

“Did I ask you?”

Clare stopped talking.

She lowered her eyes.

Dominic wasn’t trying to scare her.

But everyone knew Dominic Vale had a way of making people tell the truth.

Ellie stepped closer.

Her small fingers pointed toward the black strap around his injured knee.

“That part is wrong.”

Everyone looked down.

Dominic frowned.

“What part?”

“The shiny piece.”

She pointed at a small silver plate hidden under the strap.

Dominic stared.

Nobody had mentioned that piece before.

Not his doctors.

Not his rehabilitation team.

Not the specialists who charged him thousands of dollars every week.

“What about it?”

Ellie looked at the wooden toy in her hand.

It was a small puzzle board with locks and buttons.

“My toy has one.”

She touched a little metal clasp.

“This goes outside.”

Then she pointed at the brace.

“That one is inside.”

Nobody spoke.

At first, it sounded ridiculous.

A child talking about a medical device.

But Dominic had spent his entire life noticing small details.

And something about her confidence bothered him.

“Samuel.”

Dr. Samuel Mercer stepped forward.

Vincent Hale immediately moved in front of him.

“Slow.”

Mercer frowned.

“I’m his doctor.”

“And I’m the reason you’re still standing close enough to help him.”

“Vincent.”

Dominic’s voice stopped them.

“Let him check.”

The doctor carefully examined the brace.

At first, his face showed nothing.

Then everything changed.

His eyebrows tightened.

His breathing slowed.

Dominic noticed.

“What did you find?”

Mercer didn’t answer immediately.

That was the moment Dominic knew.

Something was wrong.

“This piece…”

The doctor touched the silver plate.

“It’s reversed.”

The room became colder.

Vincent looked at him.

“Meaning?”

Mercer swallowed.

“Meaning someone installed it incorrectly.”

Dominic’s eyes narrowed.

“Could it happen by accident?”

The doctor looked uncomfortable.

“No.”

One word.

That was all Dominic needed.

He looked through the glass doors.

Arthur Voss was sitting at the conference table.

Watching.

Waiting.

Smiling.

Arthur had been Dominic’s business partner for twenty years.

The man who always stood beside him.

The man who always offered advice.

The man who suddenly started asking if Dominic was “ready to step back.”

Dominic turned toward his doctor.

“What does this do?”

Mercer answered carefully.

“Creates pressure in the wrong place.”

“And?”

“Pain. Swelling. Nerve irritation.”

Dominic looked at his cane.

“And walking problems?”

“Yes.”

The truth hit harder than Dominic expected.

For weeks, he thought his body was failing.

But now he had another possibility.

Someone had been making sure he never recovered.

Arthur opened the conference room door.

“Dominic?”

Everyone looked at him.

Arthur smiled calmly.

“The council has been waiting.”

Dominic stared.

“A child found something my doctors missed.”

Arthur glanced at Ellie.

“A child?”

The way he said it bothered Dominic.

Not surprise.

Not curiosity.

Fear.

A tiny amount.

But Dominic saw it.

“Vincent.”

“Yes?”

“Lock the estate.”

Arthur’s smile disappeared.

“Excuse me?”

“Full lockdown.”

The guards immediately moved.

The conference room members stood.

Arthur stepped closer.

“Dominic, don’t make a mistake because you’re angry.”

Dominic looked at him.

“I’m not angry.”

He tapped his brace.

“I’m paying attention.”

Arthur said nothing.

Dominic slowly stood.

The doctor reached out.

“Careful.”

Dominic ignored him.

He placed weight on his injured leg.

Pain.

But not the unbearable pain he had felt yesterday.

He took one step.

Then another.

The entire room watched.

After weeks of struggling…

Dominic was walking.

Because a little girl noticed one small mistake.

He stopped in front of Arthur.

“The meeting is over.”

Arthur’s face tightened.

“The council will not accept this.”

Dominic looked at him.

“They will accept whatever I tell them.”

Then he turned away.

But before he reached the hallway…

Ellie grabbed Clare’s hand.

“Mommy.”

Clare looked down.

“What?”

The little girl pointed at Arthur.

“He touched it.”

Nobody moved.

Dominic turned around.

“What did you say?”

Ellie looked at Arthur.

“The man touched the click thing.”

Arthur’s face changed.

Only for a second.

But it was enough.

Dominic saw it.

And so did Vincent.

The question was no longer whether someone had sabotaged the brace.

May you like

The question was how long Arthur Voss had been planning it.

And Dominic was about to discover the answer.
