Chapter 11 - THE SECRET CLARE HID

For five seconds...

Nobody moved.

The photograph on Vincent’s phone remained frozen.

Clare Rowan standing beside David Cross’s hospital bed.

The same man connected to the accident that almost destroyed Dominic Vale’s life.

The same man who disappeared after the crash.

The same man everyone believed was gone forever.

Dominic slowly turned toward Clare.

The woman who had cleaned his house.

The woman who had protected her daughter.

The woman whose little girl had saved him.

“Explain.”

His voice was quiet.

But everyone in the room felt the danger behind it.

Clare’s face lost all color.

“Mr. Vale…”

“Why were you there?”

She looked down.

“I can explain.”

Dominic took a step forward.

“Then explain.”

Ellie held her mother’s hand tighter.

She could feel something was wrong.

Children always knew when adults were hiding pain.

Clare looked at her daughter.

Then back at Dominic.

“I didn’t know who he was at first.”

Vincent crossed his arms.

“You expect us to believe that?”

Clare looked at him.

“I’m not asking you to believe anything.”

Her voice broke.

“I’m telling you the truth.”

Dominic watched her carefully.

“Start from the beginning.”

Clare took a deep breath.

“Six months ago, before I started working here, I was looking for my husband.”

The room became quiet.

“Your husband?”

Clare nodded.

“His name was Daniel Rowan.”

Dominic frowned.

“What does he have to do with David Cross?”

Clare looked at the floor.

“Daniel was David’s passenger the night of the accident.”

Nobody spoke.

Dominic felt his chest tighten.

“Your husband was in the car?”

“Yes.”

“And?”

Clare’s eyes filled with tears.

“He died.”

The words hit the room.

Even Dominic said nothing.

For years, he had dealt with enemies.

Threats.

Betrayals.

But there was always something easier about fighting powerful people.

It was harder when innocent people were destroyed.

“What happened after?”

Clare wiped her face.

“I was told David Cross caused the crash.”

Dominic stared.

“He did.”

“No.”

Clare looked up.

“He was blamed.”

A silence followed.

Vincent stepped closer.

“You’re saying the police report was wrong?”

“I’m saying someone made sure it was wrong.”

Dominic looked at Arthur.

Arthur’s expression changed.

Only slightly.

But Dominic noticed.

“Who?”

Clare hesitated.

Then whispered:

“Arthur Voss.”

Everyone turned.

Arthur laughed.

A short, cold laugh.

“Convenient.”

Clare looked at him.

“You know it’s true.”

Arthur shook his head.

“This woman lost her husband and created a story because she needed someone to blame.”

Dominic looked between them.

Two people.

Two different versions.

One truth.

“Where is David Cross?”

Clare answered:

“He contacted me two weeks ago.”

“Why?”

“He remembered what happened.”

Dominic stared.

“What did he say?”

Clare looked at Ellie.

Then whispered:

“He said the crash wasn’t meant for you.”

Dominic froze.

“What?”

“He said the car was supposed to hit someone else.”

The room went silent.

Arthur’s face changed.

For the first time...

He looked afraid.

Dominic saw it.

And that was all he needed.

“Who?”

Clare looked directly at Arthur.

“You.”

Arthur stepped back.

Nobody breathed.

May you like

Because the biggest question was no longer who wanted Dominic gone.

It was why.
