Chapter 7 - THE SECRET BEHIND THE LOCKED DOOR

Adrian Moretti had spent his entire life learning one rule.

Never trust what you cannot verify.

In his world, a smile could hide a knife.

A handshake could hide a betrayal.

A promise could be worth less than the paper it was written on.

But Sarah Bennett had never been just another person.

She was the one person Adrian believed had protected the only thing in his life that mattered.

His daughter.

Now, for the first time, doubt entered his mind.

And doubt was dangerous.

“Everyone leaves,” Adrian said.

Vincent looked at him.

“Boss?”

“I said everyone leaves.”

The security team moved away immediately.

Only Adrian, Vincent, and Sarah remained in the room.

Sarah crossed her arms.

“You think I betrayed you?”

Adrian looked at her.

“I think there are things you haven’t told me.”

Her eyes filled with disappointment.

“After everything?”

“After eight years.”

The words hit her.

Because they were true.

Sarah looked toward Lily’s bedroom.

“She was sleeping in your arms tonight.”

Adrian stayed silent.

“You saw her smile at you.”

A pause.

“You saw what you missed.”

Adrian’s expression softened.

“I know.”

“Then don’t stand there and look at me like I’m your enemy.”

Adrian lowered his voice.

“I need the truth.”

Sarah looked away.

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then she walked toward an old wooden cabinet near the wall.

She opened a hidden compartment.

Inside was a small metal box.

Adrian immediately noticed.

“You kept that all these years?”

Sarah nodded.

“I hoped I would never have to show you.”

She placed the box on the table.

Adrian opened it.

Inside were letters.

Photographs.

Documents.

And one envelope.

His name was written on it.

ADRIAN MORETTI.

His face changed.

“Who wrote this?”

Sarah whispered:

“You did.”

Silence.

Adrian looked at her.

“What?”

Sarah shook her head.

“Not exactly.”

She pointed to the envelope.

“Someone copied your handwriting.”

Adrian opened it carefully.

Inside was one sentence.

A sentence that made his blood turn cold.

If you ever come back for your daughter, she dies.

The next morning, Vincent discovered something worse.

The man they captured had disappeared.

Not escaped.

Disappeared.

The police records were altered.

The evidence was gone.

Someone powerful had reached into the system.

Someone with access.

Someone close.

Adrian stood in his office staring at the city below.

“Find out who touched that file.”

Vincent nodded.

“Already working on it.”

“And Vincent?”

“Yes, boss?”

Adrian looked at the photograph of Lily on his desk.

“No more secrets.”

Vincent understood.

The old Adrian would have hunted silently.

The new Adrian needed answers.

Because now his daughter was involved.

That afternoon, Lily sat beside Adrian in the garden.

Neither of them spoke for a while.

Finally, she asked:

“Were you really watching me?”

Adrian looked at her.

The question surprised him.

“How did you know?”

“Mom said you knew things.”

He looked down.

“Yes.”

“Like what?”

Adrian smiled slightly.

“I knew you hated broccoli.”

Lily laughed.

“I do hate broccoli.”

“I knew you loved stars.”

Her smile faded.

“How?”

Adrian looked at the sky.

“Because you used to draw them.”

A small silence.

Then Lily whispered:

“I wanted you to see my drawings.”

Adrian looked at her.

“I’m seeing them now.”

She looked at him carefully.

“Are you going away again?”

The question froze him.

“No.”

“Promise?”

Adrian knew promises were dangerous.

Especially ones he couldn't guarantee.

But this one mattered.

“I promise I’ll fight to stay.”

Lily nodded.

But before Adrian could say anything else—

A loud crash came from inside the house.

Someone had broken in.

May you like

And they weren't looking for him.

They were looking for Lily.
