Chapter 2 - THE FIRST TIME SHE SAID HIS NAME

Adrian Moretti had walked into rooms where men twice his size reached for weapons.
He had negotiated with criminals who smiled while planning his death.
He had stared down enemies who wanted him buried.
But nothing had prepared him for a little girl standing behind a wooden door, looking at him like he was a stranger.
Because he was.
The door opened slowly.
Sarah Bennett stood there.
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
She looked older than Adrian remembered.
Not from photographs.
From reality.
Three years of raising Lily alone had changed her.
There were tired lines around her eyes.
A strength in her posture.
And something else.
Pain.
âYou actually came.â
Adrian swallowed.
âI said I would.â
Sarah looked behind him.
The security cars.
The men standing far away.
The careful distance.
âYou brought an army.â
âI brought protection.â
âFor who?â
The question was sharp.
Adrian knew she wasnât talking about herself.
He looked down.
âHer.â
Sarah studied his face.
âYou always say that.â
The words hit harder than he expected.
âYou always say youâre protecting her.â
A pause.
âBut Lily has spent eight years wondering why her father never showed up.â
Adrian had no answer.
Because every answer sounded like an excuse.
âI thought keeping away would keep her safe.â
Sarahâs expression hardened.
âYou thought wrong.â
The words were quiet.
But they hurt.
âI know.â
That surprised her.
Adrian Moretti never admitted mistakes.
Not to anyone.
âI know I was wrong.â
Before Sarah could respond, a small voice came from the hallway.
âMom?â
Both of them froze.
Lily appeared.
Eight years old.
Messy brown hair.
A pink sweater.
A stuffed bear pressed against her chest.
Mr. Buttons.
Adrian forgot how to breathe.
Because for years, he had looked at pictures.
Videos.
Reports.
But nothing prepared him for seeing his daughter standing in front of him.
His daughter.
Lily looked at Sarah.
âWho is he?â
Sarah looked at Adrian.
Then back at Lily.
âThis is Adrian.â
The little girl stared.
âAdrian who?â
A painful silence.
Sarah whispered:
âAdrian Moretti.â
Lilyâs fingers tightened around the bear.
The name meant nothing.
And somehow that hurt the most.
Adrian slowly lowered himself to her level.
âHi, Lily.â
She didn't answer.
âYou know my name?â
A small question.
A devastating one.
âYes.â
âHow?â
Adrian looked at Sarah.
Then back at his daughter.
âBecause Iâve known you your whole life.â
Lily frowned.
âThat doesnât make sense.â
âNo.â
His voice cracked slightly.
âIt doesnât.â
She studied him.
Then asked the question Adrian had feared.
âWhy didnât you come before?â
The room went silent.
Adrian searched for the perfect answer.
There wasnât one.
âI was scared.â
Lily blinked.
âOf me?â
âNo.â
He shook his head.
âOf what could happen to you because of me.â
The little girl looked down.
Then quietly said:
âI drew you.â
Adrian froze.
âWhat?â
âThe man with no face.â
His heart tightened.
âI saw them.â
âMy drawings?â
âYes.â
Lily looked embarrassed.
âI didnât know what you looked like.â
Adrian felt something break inside him.
âIâm sorry.â
Lily looked at him.
âAre you staying?â
The question was simple.
But Adrian knew the answer could change everything.
âYes.â
A small smile almost appeared.
âI'm going to try.â
But outside the house, hidden in a parked vehicle, someone watched.
Someone who had been waiting for this exact moment.
May you like
And they sent one message:
The girl finally met her father.
