Chapter 11 - THE MAN WHO CHOSE THE LIE

Adrian did not sleep.
He sat in his office until sunrise.
The same question repeated in his mind.
Why?
Why would Vincent hide Lily?
Why would the man who protected him also keep his daughter away?
When Vincent arrived, Adrian was waiting.
âYou knew she saw you.â
Vincent nodded.
âYes.â
âAnd you still stayed close to me.â
âYes.â
âWhy?â
Vincent looked tired.
âBecause someone had to protect both of you.â
Adrian stood.
âFrom who?â
Vincent hesitated.
That hesitation told Adrian there was still more.
âVincent.â
The old warning.
The one that made enemies shake.
But Vincent didn't move.
âFrom you.â
The words filled the room.
Adrian stared.
âYou think I was the danger?â
âI think your enemies were.â
A pause.
âBut I also knew you.â
Vincent walked closer.
âYou would have chosen revenge over fatherhood.â
Adrian wanted to deny it.
But he couldn't.
Because deep inside, he knew.
Eight years ago, he was different.
More violent.
More ruthless.
A man who believed love was something enemies could use against him.
Vincent continued.
âSarah begged me.â
âBegged you?â
âShe said Lily deserved a chance to be a child.â
Adrian closed his eyes.
The pain was worse than anger.
Because he understood.
Everyone had made choices.
And all of them believed they were protecting Lily.
Except Lily had been the one person nobody asked.
Then Adrian noticed something.
âWait.â
Vincent looked at him.
âYou said Sarah begged you.â
âYes.â
âWhen did she know about the threat?â
Vincent became silent.
Too silent.
Adrian immediately noticed.
âVincent.â
Slowly, Vincent reached into his coat.
He pulled out a photograph.
Adrian took it.
His hands tightened.
The picture showed Sarah.
Holding newborn Lily.
Standing beside another man.
A man Adrian recognized.
The Ghost.
But that wasn't what shocked him.
It was the date.
The photograph was taken before Adrian knew Lily existed.
âHow?â
Vincent whispered:
âBecause he was there before you.â
Adrian looked up.
âWho is he?â
Vincentâs face changed.
âSomeone you thought was dead.â
The investigation lasted less than six hours.
And what they found changed everything.
The Ghost wasn't a random enemy.
He wasn't an outsider.
He was Adrian's older half-brother.
Matteo Moretti.
The man everyone believed died fifteen years earlier.
The man Adrian's father erased from the family history.
The man who had every reason to hate him.
Adrian stared at the file.
âMy brother.â
Vincent nodded.
âHe survived.â
âWhy hide?â
âBecause he wanted what your father gave you.â
The empire.
The name.
The power.
Adrian looked at the photo.
âAnd Lily?â
Vincent looked serious.
âThatâs the part we donât understand.â
A pause.
âHe didnât want her dead.â
Adrian looked up.
âWhat?â
Vincent lowered his voice.
âHe wanted her to grow up knowing who you were.â
The words made no sense.
âWhy?â
Vincent looked at him.
âBecause he wanted you to suffer.â
That night, Adrian received a message.
No number.
No location.
Only one sentence.
You finally found the truth.
Then another message arrived.
A picture.
Lily sleeping.
Taken minutes earlier.
Adrianâs blood turned cold.
Someone was inside the house.
Someone was close.
Too close.
May you like
And beneath the photo was a final message.
Now letâs see what kind of father you really are.
