Chapter 10 - THE NAME WRITTEN IN HER DRAWING

Adrian Moretti had spent years believing he knew every enemy around him.
That was how he survived.
He studied people.
Their habits.
Their weaknesses.
Their lies.
But the drawing in Lilyâs notebook forced him to question everything.
Because the man she had drawn was not a stranger.
It was someone Adrian had trusted.
Someone who had stood beside him during his darkest years.
Someone who knew every secret Adrian had ever buried.
Vincent Russo.
Adrian stared at the drawing.
The familiar face.
The dark hair.
The scar above the eyebrow.
There was no mistake.
His closest friend.
The man who had saved his life.
The man who had protected him.
The man who had promised to protect Lily.
For several seconds, Adrian couldn't speak.
âBoss?â
Vincent stood at the doorway.
Adrian slowly closed the notebook.
âCome inside.â
Vincent noticed his expression.
âWhat happened?â
Adrian placed the drawing on the desk.
Vincent looked down.
And froze.
The silence told Adrian everything.
âYou know him.â
Vincent looked away.
âAdrianâŠâ
âDonât.â
The warning in his voice was enough.
âDonât protect anyone from me right now.â
Vincent took a slow breath.
âI donât know what you think youâre seeing.â
âIâm seeing my daughter draw the face of a man who has been around my family for years.â
Vincent shook his head.
âBecause she saw me.â
The answer stopped Adrian.
âWhat?â
Vincent looked at the drawing again.
âShe saw me.â
Adrianâs expression changed.
âWhen?â
âEight years ago.â
The room became silent.
Vincent sat down.
âI came to the hospital when Lily was born.â
Adrian stared.
âYou never told me.â
âBecause you werenât supposed to know.â
The words cut through him.
âWhat does that mean?â
Vincent looked at him.
âIt means Sarah was right.â
Adrianâs jaw tightened.
âAbout what?â
âThat if you knew Lily existed, you would have destroyed everything.â
Adrian stepped closer.
âYouâre saying you helped hide my daughter from me?â
Vincent didn't answer.
And that silence was enough.
For the first time in eleven years, Adrian looked at Vincent differently.
Not as his friend.
Not as his brother.
As a question.
âWhy?â
Vincentâs eyes softened.
âBecause I knew what you were becoming.â
Adrian laughed quietly.
âYou mean dangerous?â
âI mean empty.â
The words landed.
Vincent continued.
âYou had power. Money. Fear. Everything.â
A pause.
âBut you had nothing that made you human.â
Adrian looked away.
âAnd you thought taking my daughter away would fix me?â
âNo.â
Vincent shook his head.
âI thought keeping her alive mattered more.â
Adrian clenched his fists.
âYou should have trusted me.â
Vincent looked at him.
âWould you have walked away?â
Adrian had no answer.
Because Vincent knew him.
The old Adrian would have hunted every enemy.
Every person involved.
Every possible threat.
And Lily would have grown up inside a war.
That night, Adrian sat beside Lilyâs bed.
She opened her eyes.
âYouâre sad.â
Adrian smiled slightly.
âIâm thinking.â
âAbout the drawing?â
He looked at her.
âYou remember drawing it?â
âYes.â
âWhy did you draw that person?â
Lily looked down.
âBecause he told me to.â
Adrian froze.
âWho?â
She hugged Mr. Buttons.
âHe said I needed to remember him.â
A cold feeling moved through Adrian.
âWhat did he look like?â
Lily looked at him.
âHe had a scar.â
Adrianâs heart sank.
âDid he tell you his name?â
She nodded.
âYes.â
May you like
A pause.
âUncle Vincent.â
