Chapter 5 - THE NIGHT THE FATHER FOUGHT BACK

The first bullet hit the wall.
The second destroyed the lamp.
Lily screamed.
Sarah grabbed her.
Adrian moved instantly.
Years of survival took control.
He pushed them behind cover.
âStay down!â
The little girl looked at him.
Not like a stranger anymore.
Like someone she believed could protect her.
Adrian noticed.
And that nearly broke him.
Because he had spent years staying away to protect her.
Now he was finally here.
And danger had followed him.
Vincentâs security team rushed in from outside.
Gunfire echoed through the house.
Adrian reached for the weapon one of his men handed him.
Sarah saw it.
For a moment, fear crossed her face.
Not because of the attackers.
Because she saw the old Adrian.
The dangerous one.
The man who solved problems permanently.
âAdrian.â
He looked at her.
âNot in front of Lily.â
Those words stopped him.
He looked toward his daughter.
She was shaking.
Holding Mr. Buttons.
Watching him.
Waiting.
Adrian lowered the weapon slightly.
Then he moved.
Not with anger.
With control.
Within minutes, the attackers retreated.
The house became quiet again.
Sirens approached.
Lily slowly walked toward him.
Adrian expected fear.
Instead, she asked:
âWere they trying to hurt me?â
He knelt.
âYes.â
âBecause of you?â
The question destroyed him.
âYes.â
A tear rolled down her cheek.
âI thought you didnât come because you didnât want me.â
Adrianâs heart broke.
âNo.â
His voice trembled.
âI stayed away because I wanted you to live.â
She looked at him.
âBut I wanted you.â
Adrian closed his eyes.
Those four words hurt more than any injury.
Then his phone rang.
Vincent.
Adrian answered.
âBoss.â
âWhat?â
A pause.
âWe caught one of them.â
âWho?â
Vincentâs voice became darker.
âIt wasnât Volkov.â
Adrian stood.
âThen who?â
The answer came slowly.
âIt was someone connected to Lilyâs mother.â
Adrian looked toward Sarah.
May you like
And realized the truth.
The danger around Lily had started long before he came back.
