The next morning, I released one file.
Only one.
A classified report that had finally been cleared.
The operation near the Canadian border.
The one where I disappeared.
The one Vanessa used to destroy me.
The report showed everything.
The criminal organization.
The threats.
The reason my communication had been restricted.
The reason I could not call my daughter.
And the final page contained one sentence:
"Agent Evelyn Carter prevented a major trafficking operation and saved 14 victims, including three children."
The world went silent.
The same people who attacked me yesterday were defending me today.
But I didn’t care about them.
I only cared about Lily.
That night, she climbed into my bed.
“Mommy?”
“Yes, baby?”
“Are you staying this time?”
I held her tightly.
“Yes.”
She looked at me carefully.
