CHAPTER 1 — The Man Who Chose Another Woman

CHAPTER 1 — The Man Who Chose Another Woman

Grant stood frozen in the doorway.

For a few seconds, nobody moved.

His eyes went from me holding Lily in my arms, to Vanessa standing beside the sofa, then to the broken wine glass on the floor.

He looked confused.

Not guilty.

Confused.

Like he couldn’t understand why his carefully controlled world had suddenly collapsed.

“Baby…” he said to Vanessa.

“What happened?”

That single sentence told me everything.

Eight weeks away.

Eight weeks risking my life.

Eight weeks believing I was protecting my family.

And the first thing my husband did when he saw our injured daughter was protect another woman.

Lily tightened her arms around my neck.

She was still shaking.

“Grant,” I said quietly.

He finally looked at me.

His expression changed.

For the first time, he seemed to remember that I was not just some exhausted agent standing in his living room.

I was his wife.

The mother of his child.

“What are you doing here?” he asked.

I almost laughed.

“What am I doing here?”

My voice was calm.

Too calm.

“I live here.”

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

“Don’t start pretending everything is normal, Evelyn.”

I looked at her.

“You had your shoe on my daughter’s hand.”

Her smile faded slightly.

“She was being punished.”

“She’s five.”

“She’s spoiled.”

The room went silent.

I looked at Grant.

Waiting.

Waiting for him to say something.

Anything.

But he said nothing.

That hurt more than Vanessa’s cruelty.

“You knew?” I whispered.

Grant looked away.

That was my answer.

“You knew.”

“Evelyn, you don’t understand—”

“No.”

I interrupted him.

“I understand perfectly.”

I carried Lily upstairs.

Every step felt heavier than the last.

Behind me, I heard Vanessa whisper:

“She’s going to make this difficult.”

And Grant answered:

“She always does.”

That night, I sat beside Lily’s bed.

She didn’t sleep.

Neither did I.

For hours, she held my hand.

Finally, at 3:17 a.m., she whispered something.

The first words I had heard from her in weeks.

“Mommy…”

My heart stopped.

“Yes, baby?”

“Did you leave because you didn’t want me anymore?”

The question destroyed me.

Because I realized someone had been slowly poisoning my daughter’s heart while I was gone.

I kissed her forehead.

“No, Lily.”

My voice broke.

“I left because I was trying to protect people like you.”

She looked at me.

“Who was protecting me?”

I had no answer.

Not yet.

May you like

But I promised myself one thing.

Never again.
