Chapter 8 - THE WOMAN WHO REMEMBERED EVERYTHING

Anne Miller opened her eyes slowly.

The first thing she saw was the ceiling.

White.

Cold.

Unfamiliar.

Then came the pain.

Every breath hurt.

Every movement felt impossible.

But one thought pushed through everything.

Sarah.

“Where is my daughter?”

Her voice was weak.

A nurse immediately leaned closer.

“Mrs. Miller, you need to rest.”

“My daughter.”

The nurse smiled gently.

“She’s safe.”

Anne closed her eyes.

A tear escaped.

“Thank God.”

The door opened.

Anne’s eyes opened again.

And then she saw him.

Matthew.

Twenty years disappeared in a single second.

The young man she remembered was gone.

In his place stood a powerful billionaire.

A man everyone feared.

But she saw something nobody else saw.

The hurt.

The same hurt he carried the day she left.

“Matthew
”

Her voice broke.

He couldn’t move.

He had imagined this moment thousands of times.

He imagined anger.

He imagined questions.

He imagined revenge.

But standing there, seeing her alive

All he felt was pain.

“Why?”

That was all he could say.

Anne looked away.

“I’m sorry.”

“No.”

His voice became sharper.

“Don’t say sorry.”

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“Matthew
”

“You let me believe you left me.”

“I had no choice.”

“You had twenty years.”

“I was protecting you.”

“By disappearing?”

“Yes.”

The answer was immediate.

Matthew stopped.

Anne looked at him.

“You think I wanted to leave?”

Her voice cracked.

“You think I wanted Sarah to grow up without her father?”

Matthew looked toward the hallway.

Where Sarah was waiting.

“I didn’t even know she existed.”

Anne closed her eyes.

“I know.”

The words hurt more because they were true.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Anne was silent.

Then she whispered:

“Because every person who knew about you became a target.”

Matthew felt a chill.

“What does that mean?”

Anne looked terrified.

“Your father wasn’t the only danger.”

“What are you saying?”

“There was someone else.”

“Who?”

Anne looked toward the door.

Her face changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

“Charles.”

Matthew’s expression hardened.

“He was involved?”

Anne nodded.

“Your uncle knew everything.”

Before Matthew could answer, Sarah ran into the room.

“Mommy!”

Anne immediately cried.

Not from pain.

From relief.

Sarah climbed onto the bed carefully.

“I thought you were gone.”

Anne held her daughter as tightly as she could.

“I’m here.”

“You promise?”

Anne smiled through tears.

“I promise.”

Matthew watched them.

And for the first time, he saw what he had lost.

Not just a woman.

Not just a relationship.

A family.

A family that had been stolen from him.

Then Anne looked at him.

“Matthew.”

“Yes?”

“There’s something you need to know.”

“What?”

She swallowed.

“The accident wasn’t meant for me.”

Matthew went still.

“What?”

Anne looked at Sarah.

“It was meant for her.”

The room froze.

Matthew’s blood turned cold.

“Who?”

May you like

Anne’s voice became barely a whisper.

“Someone who knows Sarah is the true heir of Sullivan Holdings.”
