Chapter 14 - THE MAN WHO STOLE TWENTY YEARS

Everything happened in seconds.
David raised the gun.
Matthew pushed Sarah behind him.
Charles stepped forward.
And thenâŠ
A gunshot exploded through the warehouse.
Sarah screamed.
But nobody fell.
Because Charles had moved.
The bullet hit his shoulder.
He collapsed.
âCharles!â
Matthew caught him before he hit the ground.
David stared.
Almost annoyed.
âYou always were too loyal.â
Charles looked up.
âSomeone had to be.â
David smiled.
âAfter all these years, you still donât understand.â
Matthew helped Charles sit down.
âWhat do you want?â
David laughed.
âWhat I always wanted.â
He looked around the warehouse.
âControl.â
âMoney?â
âNo.â
David shook his head.
âMoney is just a tool.â
He looked at Matthew.
âPower is making people believe you are the only one who can save them.â
Matthew stared.
âYou destroyed my family for power.â
âNo.â
Davidâs expression hardened.
âYour family destroyed itself.â
Sarah held onto Matthewâs jacket.
âDaddyâŠâ
âIâm here.â
David noticed.
âYou know whatâs funny?â
Matthew said nothing.
âThat little girl was the reason everything changed.â
He pointed at Sarah.
âYour father changed his will because of her.â
âYes.â
âAnd that made everyone panic.â
David smiled.
âBecause if Sarah inherited Sullivan Holdings, everything I built would disappear.â
Matthewâs eyes narrowed.
âSo you created all of this.â
David didnât answer.
But he didnât need to.
The truth was there.
The lies.
The threats.
The accident.
Everything.
Matthew stepped forward.
âYou ruined Anneâs life.â
âYes.â
âYou separated a daughter from her father.â
âYes.â
âYou tried to kill a five-year-old child.â
David looked at Sarah.
For the first time, his face showed something.
Not regret.
Not guilt.
Fear.
Because he knew what he had done.
And he knew Matthew would never forgive him.
âYou think youâre different from your father.â
David smiled.
âYouâre not.â
Matthew stopped.
âYou became powerful because you were angry.â
A pause.
âYou built an empire because you wanted revenge.â
David lowered the gun slightly.
âBut SarahâŠâ
He looked at her.
âShe changed you.â
Matthew looked down.
At his daughter.
The little girl with the broken bracelet.
The little girl who offered her dolls to save someone else.
And he realized something.
David was right about one thing.
Sarah changed him.
But not into a weaker man.
Into a better one.
Sirens sounded outside.
Police surrounded the building.
David looked toward the doors.
âYou called them?â
Matthew shook his head.
âNo.â
Everyone looked confused.
Then Emily walked in.
Holding a phone.
âI did.â
Davidâs face changed.
âEmily?â
She looked at him.
âI finally understood who the real enemy was.â
David stared.
âYou betrayed me?â
Emily shook her head.
âNo.â
She looked at Matthew.
âI stopped protecting the wrong people.â
Police rushed inside.
David was arrested.
The nightmare was finally ending.
But before they took him away, David looked at Matthew.
âYou think this is over?â
Matthew stared.
âIt is.â
David smiled.
âNo.â
He looked at Sarah.
âYou still donât know the biggest secret.â
Matthewâs face changed.
âWhat secret?â
David only laughed.
May you like
And as the police dragged him away, he said:
âAsk Anne who Sarahâs real father was supposed to be.â
