Chapter 11 - THE ENEMY INSIDE THE FAMILY

The hospital became chaos.

Police arrived.

Security rushed through the halls.

Doctors moved patients away from danger.

But Matthew didn’t move.

He stood beside Sarah.

His daughter.

The little girl who had once offered her dolls to save her mother.

The little girl who had no idea powerful people were fighting over her existence.

“Daddy?”

Matthew looked down.

“Yes?”

“Is Emily bad?”

The question hurt.

Because Sarah wasn’t asking about a villain.

She was asking about a person.

Matthew looked at Emily sitting against the wall, surrounded by security.

“I don’t know yet.”

Sarah frowned.

“Mommy says people can make bad choices and still be sad.”

Matthew looked at Anne.

Even after everything

Anne still taught their daughter kindness.

A nurse approached.

“Mr. Sullivan?”

“Yes?”

“We found something.”

She handed him a tablet.

Security footage.

“Someone accessed the hospital system before the blackout.”

Matthew watched the video.

A person wearing a mask walked into the records room.

Changed Anne’s files.

Changed security settings.

Then left.

“Can you identify them?”

The nurse hesitated.

“We zoomed in.”

The image appeared.

Matthew stared.

Because he knew that face.

Not Emily.

Not Charles.

Someone else.

Someone closer.

Much closer.

“Impossible.”

Anne saw his expression.

“What is it?”

Matthew turned the screen toward her.

Anne’s face lost all color.

“No
”

“Who is he?”

Anne whispered:

“David.”

Matthew felt a strange anger rise.

“Who is David?”

Anne looked at him.

“Your father’s lawyer.”

The man who handled all Sullivan family legal matters.

The man who helped create the inheritance.

The man who knew every secret.

“He’s alive?”

Anne nodded.

“He was the one who delivered your father’s final documents.”

Matthew remembered.

Years ago.

After his father’s death.

David had walked into his office.

Cold.

Professional.

Emotionless.

He had said:

“Your father’s last wish was that you continue the Sullivan legacy.”

But apparently there was more.

Much more.

Matthew picked up his phone.

“Find him.”

His security chief answered immediately.

“We’ll locate him.”

“No.”

Matthew looked at Sarah.

“Bring him to me.”

A pause.

“Alive.”

Hours later, Matthew was standing in an empty conference room.

David Carter walked in.

Older.

Calm.

Not surprised.

“Matthew.”

The billionaire stared.

“You know why you’re here.”

David smiled.

“I assume Anne finally told you everything.”

“No.”

Matthew stepped closer.

“I want to hear it from you.”

David sat down.

“Your father was a complicated man.”

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

Matthew slammed his hand on the table.

“I’m tired of excuses.”

David looked at him.

“Then hear the truth.”

The room went silent.

“Your father didn’t order Anne to disappear.”

Matthew froze.

“What?”

“He ordered me to protect her.”

Matthew didn’t understand.

“Then why did she run?”

“Because someone inside the company wanted her gone.”

“Who?”

David looked directly into his eyes.

“Your uncle Charles.”

Matthew felt the floor disappear.

“Charles?”

David nodded.

“He wanted control.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because your father made me promise.”

“What promise?”

David looked toward the window.

“That if Charles ever tried to take Sarah’s inheritance
”

A pause.

“I would reveal everything.”

Matthew stared.

“And now?”

David looked back.

“Now it’s too late.”

“What do you mean?”

David’s expression changed.

Fear.

“Because Charles already activated the final move.”

Matthew’s phone suddenly rang.

It was Dr. Kline.

Matthew answered.

“What happened?”

The doctor’s voice was shaking.

“Mr. Sullivan
”

Matthew stood.

May you like

“What?”

“Sarah is missing.”
