Chapter 4 - THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH

“Your daughter was never supposed to survive.”

The words hit Matthew Sullivan harder than any punch ever could.

For a moment, he forgot how to breathe.

The hospital noise came rushing back.

The beeping machines.

The footsteps.

The voices.

But all he could hear was that sentence.

Your daughter.

Never supposed to survive.

Matthew stepped closer to the man in the gray suit.

“Who are you?”

The stranger didn’t answer right away.

He looked around the hallway like he was checking who might be listening.

“My name is Richard Cole.”

Matthew’s eyes narrowed.

“I don’t know you.”

“You were never supposed to.”

Richard glanced at Sarah.

“And she was never supposed to know you.”

Sarah looked between them.

“Mr. Matthew?”

The innocent sound of her voice made Matthew’s anger disappear for a second.

He turned back to Richard.

“You have five seconds to explain yourself.”

Richard gave a small, bitter laugh.

“Still the same Matthew Sullivan.”

“What does that mean?”

“It means you still think money can force the truth to come out.”

Matthew’s jaw tightened.

“Careful.”

Richard didn’t move.

“Twenty years ago, Anne Miller disappeared because someone wanted her gone.”

Matthew froze.

“What are you talking about?”

“You thought she left you.”

“She did.”

“No.”

The answer came immediately.

“She ran because she was protecting someone.”

Matthew felt his hands become cold.

“Protecting who?”

Richard looked at Sarah.

“Her daughter.”

Sarah stepped backward.

“I don’t understand.”

Neither did Matthew.

But somewhere deep inside, something was breaking apart.

All these years, he had carried one painful memory.

Anne leaving him.

Anne choosing a life without him.

Anne refusing to explain.

He had built an empire on top of that pain.

He had convinced himself that becoming rich was revenge against the world.

And now a stranger was telling him the entire foundation of his life was a lie.

“Where was she?” Matthew asked.

Richard stayed silent.

“Where was Anne all these years?”

“She was running.”

“From me?”

“No.”

Richard’s voice lowered.

“From your father.”

Matthew’s face changed.

“My father died fifteen years ago.”

“His company didn’t.”

The hallway suddenly felt colder.

Matthew knew exactly what Richard meant.

Sullivan Holdings.

The empire his father built.

The empire Matthew inherited.

The empire everyone believed was clean.

“You’re saying my family was involved?”

“I’m saying your father discovered Anne was pregnant.”

Matthew looked at Sarah.

His daughter.

His child.

The daughter he never knew existed.

“And?”

Richard looked away.

“He didn’t want an heir born outside his control.”

Matthew’s stomach turned.

“No.”

“You don’t know what your father was capable of.”

“He loved me.”

Richard’s expression hardened.

“He loved his legacy more.”

Before Matthew could respond, a loud crash came from the emergency room.

Everyone turned.

A nurse ran out.

“Doctor!”

Dr. Kline rushed toward the doors.

“What happened?”

“She stopped responding.”

Sarah’s face went white.

“Mommy?”

Matthew grabbed her hand.

“It’s okay.”

But his own voice didn’t believe him.

Doctors disappeared behind the surgery doors.

The red emergency light turned on.

And for the first time in twenty years

Matthew Sullivan prayed.

Not as a billionaire.

Not as a businessman.

Just as a father.

Because the woman he thought abandoned him

Was fighting for her life.

And the little girl holding his hand

Was the daughter he never got to hold.

Then Richard leaned closer and whispered:

“If Anne wakes up, you need to ask her one question.”

Matthew looked at him.

“What question?”

May you like

Richard’s eyes darkened.

“Ask her who tried to kill her this morning.”
