Chapter 3 - THE SECRET HIDDEN IN A HOSPITAL DRAWER

“Sarah.”

Matthew crouched beside her.

The billionaire CEO.

The man whose time was worth thousands of dollars per minute.

Was now sitting on a hospital floor beside a five-year-old girl.

“Your mom is going to fight,” he said.

Sarah stared at him.

“You promise?”

Matthew opened his mouth.

Then stopped.

Because successful people made promises carefully.

But children believed promises completely.

“I promise I’ll do everything I can.”

Sarah looked down.

“That’s what Mommy says.”

“What?”

“She says good people don’t always fix everything.”

Her little fingers touched the broken bracelet in the box.

“But they stay.”

Matthew felt his chest tighten.

“Your mom taught you that?”

Sarah nodded.

“She said leaving is easy.”

A pause.

“Staying is what makes someone family.”

Those words followed Matthew like a shadow.

Because twenty years ago, he thought Anne was the one who left.

But what if he was wrong?

A nurse approached.

“Mr. Sullivan?”

Matthew stood.

“Yes?”

“There is something you need to see.”

Dr. Kline had returned from the operating room.

His expression was serious.

“Mrs. Miller is stable for now.”

Sarah immediately smiled.

“She’s okay?”

“For now,” the doctor repeated gently.

The smile disappeared.

Matthew noticed.

“What aren’t you saying?”

Dr. Kline looked at him.

“She had no emergency contact listed.”

“I’ll handle everything.”

“That’s not the issue.”

“What is?”

The doctor hesitated.

Then handed him a small envelope.

“We found this in her personal belongings.”

Matthew looked confused.

“Why are you giving it to me?”

“Because your name is written on it.”

The hallway disappeared.

Matthew stared at the envelope.

His name.

After twenty years.

His hands shook slightly.

He opened it.

Inside was a single piece of paper.

Only one sentence was written.

Matthew,

I never stopped trying to find you.

But I was afraid you would hate the truth.

The paper slipped from his hand.

Sarah watched him.

“Do you know my mommy?”

Matthew couldn’t answer.

Because inside that envelope was a truth that could destroy everything he believed about his past.

And at the bottom of the page were four words that changed his life forever.

“Sarah is your daughter.”

Matthew looked at the little girl.

The child holding a box of broken dolls.

The child who had offered everything she owned to save her mother.

His daughter.

But before he could say a word

A man in a gray suit walked into the hospital.

He looked directly at Matthew.

Then at Sarah.

And whispered:

“So she finally told you.”

Matthew turned.

“Who are you?”

The man smiled.

“Someone who knows why Anne disappeared.”

May you like

And then he said the one thing Matthew never expected to hear.

“Your daughter was never supposed to survive.”
