Chapter 6 - THE ACCIDENT THAT WASN’T AN ACCIDENT

The hospital room was quiet.

Too quiet.

Anne Miller lay unconscious beneath a thin white blanket.

Machines surrounded her.

Every beep reminded Matthew of how close he came to losing her again.

Twenty years.

Twenty years of anger.

Twenty years of believing a lie.

And now she was lying there because someone wanted her gone.

Matthew stood beside the bed.

He looked at the woman he had once loved more than anything.

Older.

Tired.

But still Anne.

The same woman who used to laugh when they had no money.

The same woman who danced with him in their tiny apartment kitchen.

The same woman who once told him:

“Matthew, a person’s worth isn’t measured by what they own. It’s measured by what they’re willing to lose for someone else.”

He never forgot those words.

He just forgot who said them.

The door opened.

Dr. Kline walked in.

“Mr. Sullivan.”

Matthew turned.

“What did you find?”

The doctor held a folder.

“The car accident report.”

“And?”

“There are inconsistencies.”

“What kind?”

Dr. Kline opened the file.

“The brakes failed.”

Matthew waited.

“But the mechanic report says the brake lines were cut.”

Silence.

Someone had tried to kill her.

Matthew felt anger rising.

“Who knew she was in that car?”

“That’s what we’re trying to figure out.”

A small voice came from behind him.

“Is someone trying to hurt Mommy?”

Matthew turned.

Sarah stood in the doorway.

Her eyes were full of fear.

He immediately softened.

“No, sweetheart.”

She looked at him.

“Are you lying?”

The question caught him.

Because she sounded exactly like Anne.

Honest.

Direct.

Unforgiving.

Matthew walked toward her.

“I don’t know everything yet.”

Sarah looked down.

“But you’re going to find out?”

He nodded.

“Yes.”

“Promise?”

Matthew knelt.

This time, he didn’t hesitate.

“I promise.”

Sarah reached into the cardboard box.

She pulled out the bracelet.

The broken one.

“Mommy said promises are like this.”

She held it up.

“Even if one piece is missing
”

She smiled sadly.

“It still matters.”

Matthew looked at the bracelet.

Then at his daughter.

And made a decision.

For twenty years, he had built an empire.

Now he was going to use it for something that actually mattered.

Finding the truth.

Protecting his family.

No matter who stood in his way.

The next morning, Matthew returned to Sullivan Tower.

The building that carried his family name.

The place where he became powerful.

But this time, he wasn’t walking in as CEO.

He was walking in as a father.

His assistant, Emily, rushed toward him.

“Mr. Sullivan, your schedule is packed.”

“Cancel everything.”

She stopped.

“Everything?”

“Yes.”

“May I ask why?”

Matthew looked at the massive windows overlooking the city.

“Because someone tried to kill my family.”

Emily’s face changed.

“Your family?”

Before Matthew could answer, the elevator doors opened.

A man stepped out.

Older.

Gray hair.

Expensive suit.

A man Matthew hadn’t seen in years.

His uncle.

Charles Sullivan.

The man who took control of the company after Matthew’s father died.

Charles smiled.

“Matthew.”

Matthew stared at him.

“What are you doing here?”

Charles looked amused.

“I heard you found Anne Miller.”

The room went silent.

Matthew’s eyes hardened.

“How do you know that name?”

Charles smiled.

And that smile told Matthew everything.

Because only one kind of person smiled when they were caught.

A guilty one.

May you like

“I think,” Charles said quietly,

“we need to talk about the daughter you never knew you had.”
