Chapter 7 - THE MAN WHO WANTED THE TRUTH BURIED

Charles Sullivan stood in the middle of Matthew’s office like he owned the place.

Maybe because, in a way, he did.

For years, Charles had been the quiet hand behind Sullivan Holdings.

The man who made problems disappear.

The man who knew every secret inside the company.

And now he was standing there, smiling.

Like he wasn’t standing in front of the son of the man he betrayed.

Matthew closed the office door.

“Start talking.”

Charles slowly walked toward the window.

“You always were impatient.”

“You know about Anne.”

“Yes.”

“You know about Sarah.”

“Yes.”

Matthew’s fists tightened.

“And you knew I had a daughter for five years?”

Charles turned.

“Watch your tone.”

The room became cold.

Matthew laughed once.

A humorless laugh.

“My tone?”

He stepped closer.

“You lied to me for twenty years.”

Charles stared at him.

“You’re emotional.”

“No.”

Matthew shook his head.

“I’m finally awake.”

For a moment, Charles said nothing.

Then he sighed.

“Your father made difficult choices.”

“My father threatened the woman I loved.”

“Your father protected this family.”

“By destroying mine?”

Charles looked away.

“You don’t understand what was at stake.”

Matthew walked closer.

“Then explain it.”

Charles hesitated.

That hesitation told Matthew more than words.

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

“About Sarah?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Charles remained silent.

“Answer me!”

The office shook with Matthew’s voice.

Charles finally looked at him.

“Because your father believed a child born outside the Sullivan family could become a weakness.”

Matthew stared.

A weakness.

That was what Sarah was to them.

Not a person.

Not a child.

A problem.

“Where is my father’s old assistant?” Matthew asked.

Charles frowned.

“What?”

“The man who handled his private affairs.”

“Why?”

“Because I want to know who helped him.”

Charles smiled slightly.

“You really think you can dig up the past and walk away?”

Matthew’s eyes narrowed.

“Is that a threat?”

“No.”

Charles adjusted his suit.

“It’s advice.”

He moved toward the door.

“You should let the past stay buried.”

Matthew grabbed his arm.

“You tried to kill Anne.”

Charles looked down at his hand.

Then back at Matthew.

“Be careful.”

A pause.

“People who search for the truth sometimes find things they wish they never knew.”

Charles left.

Matthew stood alone.

But he wasn’t afraid.

Not anymore.

Twenty years ago, he had lost Anne because he didn’t know the truth.

This time, nobody was taking his family away.

His phone rang.

It was Dr. Kline.

Matthew answered immediately.

“What happened?”

The doctor’s voice was tense.

“It’s Anne.”

Matthew froze.

“What?”

“She woke up.”

For the first time in years, Matthew felt hope.

Then Dr. Kline continued.

“But there’s a problem.”

“What problem?”

“She’s asking for one person.”

Matthew’s heart raced.

“Who?”

A long silence.

May you like

Then:

“Charles Sullivan.”
