Chapter 8 - THE WOMAN WHO HAD BEEN WAITING

I didn’t tell Noah about the picture.
How could I?
He was four years old.
He still believed monsters only existed in cartoons.
He didn’t know some monsters wore expensive clothes.
Some smiled at family dinners.
Some called themselves relatives.
Detective Harper increased security around my house.
But the fear stayed.
Because whoever was behind this knew us.
They knew our routines.
They knew where Noah played.
They knew when I was alone.
That meant they were close.
Too close.
The custody hearing was two days away.
And I still didn’t have enough evidence to destroy the story Ryan’s family created.
Then someone unexpected contacted me.
A woman named Sarah Miller.
She said she had worked for the Carter family for five years.
She wanted to meet.
When I arrived at the café, she looked terrified.
“You’re Emily?”
“Yes.”
She looked around before speaking.
“They don’t know I’m here.”
“Who?”
Sarah swallowed.
“The Carters.”
I sat down.
“Why did you contact me?”
She pulled a small envelope from her bag.
“Because I know what happened.”
Inside were copies of emails.
Payments.
Private messages.
My hands tightened around the papers.
“How did you get these?”
“I worked in Victoria’s office.”
“Why would you help me?”
Sarah looked down.
“Because I watched what they did to Noah.”
My heart broke.
“You knew?”
She nodded.
“I saw Diane take him into that laundry room.”
I stared at her.
“Why didn’t you stop her?”
Tears filled her eyes.
“Because I was afraid.”
I softened slightly.
“Afraid of what?”
She whispered:
“They ruin people.”
She explained.
Victoria had connections.
Money.
Influence.
She had destroyed employees who spoke against her.
“She told everyone Emily was unstable.”
I looked at the documents.
“She planned this.”
Sarah nodded.
“She wanted the judge to believe Noah was unsafe with you.”
“Why?”
Sarah hesitated.
Then said:
“Because of the trust.”
I already knew about the money.
But then Sarah revealed something I didn’t.
“There is another condition.”
I looked up.
“What condition?”
“The trust only remains protected if Noah stays with a biological parent.”
I frowned.
“What?”
Sarah nodded.
“If you lose custody…”
She paused.
“The money can be transferred to a guardian.”
“Victoria.”
“Yes.”
My hands shook.
“So this was never about raising Noah.”
“No.”
Sarah looked at me.
“It was about controlling twelve million dollars.”
Before I could respond, my phone rang.
Detective Harper.
I answered.
“Emily, where are you?”
“At a café.”
“Leave immediately.”
My heart jumped.
“Why?”
“We found out someone accessed your home security system.”
I stood.
“What?”
“The person who sent you that photo…”
A pause.
“They’re not just watching you.”
I grabbed my bag.
“What are they doing?”
Detective Harper’s voice became serious.
“They’re trying to delete evidence.”
I rushed outside.
But before I reached my car…
I saw someone standing across the street.
Watching me.
A woman.
Elegant.
Confident.
Smiling.
I knew her.
Everyone in the Carter family knew her.
Victoria.
She lifted her phone.
And waved.
May you like
Like she wanted me to know.
She had been there the entire time.
