Chapter 5 - THE PERSON PULLING THE STRINGS

The next morning, I barely slept.

Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Noah on that laundry room floor.

The chain.

The dog bowl.

The fear in his eyes.

And then I saw Ryan.

Not the man who promised to love me.

Not the father who held Noah when he was born.

The man behind the camera.

The man recording his own son’s pain.

At 7:00 a.m., someone knocked on the door.

I grabbed Noah and stepped back.

My heart raced.

“Who is it?”

A woman’s voice answered.

“Emily? It’s Detective Harper.”

I checked through the window.

The detective stood outside with another officer.

I opened the door.

“Did you find something?”

Detective Harper entered.

His expression told me the answer was not good.

“We recovered more information from Ryan’s phone.”

I tightened my grip on Noah.

“What?”

He placed a folder on the table.

“Your husband wasn’t acting alone.”

I already knew.

But hearing it still hurt.

“Who?”

The detective looked at me.

“Someone close to your family.”

I opened the folder.

Inside were printed messages.

Bank transfers.

Emails.

Then I saw the name.

My breath disappeared.

Victoria Carter.

Ryan’s older sister.

I looked up.

“My sister-in-law?”

Detective Harper nodded.

“She has been communicating with your husband for months.”

I stared at the pages.

Victoria had always been polite.

Too polite.

She sent Noah birthday gifts.

She smiled at family dinners.

She always said:

"Emily, you’re lucky to have Ryan."

Now I wondered what she really meant.

The detective continued.

“She contacted a family law attorney six months ago.”

“Why?”

“To discuss custody strategies.”

My hands curled into fists.

“They planned this six months ago?”

“Yes.”

Noah looked up at me.

“Mommy?”

I immediately softened.

“It’s okay, baby.”

But it wasn’t.

Nothing was okay.

The detective pointed at another document.

“This is the part we need to understand.”

I looked down.

It was an email.

From Victoria.

To Ryan.

The subject line:

Removing Emily From The Picture

My stomach twisted.

I opened it.

The first sentence made me feel sick.

"Ryan, you need to stop feeling guilty. Emily is the only thing standing between Noah and the life he deserves."

The detective watched my face.

“They wanted you gone.”

I whispered.

“Why?”

He didn’t answer immediately.

Then he said:

“We’re investigating that.”

That afternoon, I received a call from an unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?”

A man’s voice spoke.

“Emily Carter?”

“Yes.”

“You don’t know me.”

“Who is this?”

“My name is Daniel Brooks.”

I waited.

“I used to work with your husband.”

My stomach tightened.

“What do you mean?”

“I mean I know why Ryan and his mother were collecting those videos.”

I looked at Noah playing quietly on the floor.

“Tell me.”

The man hesitated.

Then whispered:

“Because Noah is worth millions.”

I froze.

“What?”

“Your son doesn’t know it yet.”

My heart started pounding.

“What are you talking about?”

Daniel continued.

“Ryan’s father left something behind before he died.”

I gripped the phone.

“What?”

“A trust fund.”

I closed my eyes.

“Ryan inherited it?”

“No.”

A pause.

“Your son did.”

Everything went silent.

“My son?”

“Yes.”

The man lowered his voice.

“And if Noah is declared unsafe with you, the court can appoint a guardian.”

I felt sick.

“Who?”

The answer came softly.

“Someone your husband already chose.”

I looked toward the hallway.

Toward the empty space where Ryan used to hang his coat.

“Who?”

Daniel said one name.

May you like

And the world shifted.

“Victoria.”
