Chapter 11 - THE TRUTH ABOUT RYAN’S BETRAYAL

The next morning, Ryan requested to speak with me.

I almost refused.

Almost.

But Detective Harper said:

“Listen carefully. People who know they’re losing control often reveal the truth.”

So I agreed.

The meeting happened at the police station.

Ryan looked exhausted.

Older.

Like the last few days had aged him years.

He sat across from me.

“Emily.”

I said nothing.

He looked down.

“I’m sorry.”

The words felt empty.

“You’re sorry?”

“Yes.”

“For what?”

He swallowed.

“For letting it happen.”

My hands tightened.

“No.”

His eyes lifted.

“Emily…”

“You don’t get to say you ‘let it happen.’”

My voice shook.

“You watched.”

He closed his eyes.

“You’re right.”

The honesty surprised me.

But it didn’t fix anything.

“Why, Ryan?”

He sat silently for a long time.

Then he whispered:

“Because Victoria knew my weakness.”

I frowned.

“What weakness?”

“Fear.”

I stared at him.

He continued.

“After my father died, Victoria controlled everything.”

“She told me I was weak.”

“She told me I couldn’t protect the family.”

“And when Noah was born…”

He looked away.

“She told me I was wasting my father’s legacy by letting you raise him.”

I felt sick.

“So you listened?”

“I thought I was protecting Noah.”

I laughed bitterly.

“You chained him.”

His eyes filled.

“I know.”

“No.”

I leaned forward.

“You don’t know.”

My voice became quieter.

“You watched your own son cry.”

Ryan looked broken.

But I wasn’t ready to forgive.

Not even close.

“Tell me everything.”

He took a deep breath.

“Victoria discovered the trust when my father’s lawyer contacted me.”

“So she knew about the money.”

“Yes.”

“And she planned this.”

“Yes.”

“Why involve Diane?”

“Because Diane hated you.”

That wasn’t surprising.

“What about the videos?”

Ryan looked ashamed.

“Victoria told me the court needed proof.”

“Proof of what?”

“That you were unstable.”

I stared at him.

“She wanted the judge to think you were dangerous.”

“Yes.”

“And you helped her.”

“Yes.”

The word hurt.

Because there was no excuse.

Then he said something unexpected.

“But there’s something you don’t know.”

I waited.

“Victoria changed the plan.”

“What do you mean?”

“At first, she wanted custody transferred to me.”

“And then?”

Ryan’s face became pale.

“She realized if I controlled Noah, I would still protect you.”

I felt cold.

“So?”

“So she decided neither of us should have him.”

The room went silent.

“She wanted a stranger to become guardian?”

Ryan nodded.

“Someone she could control.”

My stomach turned.

Then Ryan looked at me.

“Emily, you need to leave town.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

“She knows you have the evidence.”

“Where would I go?”

“Anywhere.”

“No.”

My answer was immediate.

“I’m not running.”

Ryan looked desperate.

“You don’t understand.”

“No.”

I stood.

“You don’t understand.”

I looked him directly in the eyes.

“You spent months helping them hurt my son.”

My voice cracked.

“But now I’m done hiding.”

I turned to leave.

Then Ryan said something that made me stop.

“Emily.”

I looked back.

“She has someone inside your legal team.”

My blood ran cold.

“What?”

“She knows every move you make.”

I stared at him.

“How?”

Ryan whispered:

“Because she’s been listening to your conversations.”

I felt the room spin.

Someone close.

Someone trusted.

May you like

Someone who had access to my case.

Was working for Victoria.
