Chapter 7 - THE SECRET MY HUSBAND HID FOR SEVEN YEARS

“Your family.”

Those two words followed me long after I left Ryan’s attorney’s office.

I sat in my car for almost twenty minutes without moving.

My hands were on the steering wheel.

My eyes were fixed on the road.

But my mind was somewhere else.

Seven years.

Seven years of marriage.

Seven years of believing I knew the man beside me.

And now I was finding out that my entire life might have been built on a lie.

When I arrived home, Noah ran toward me.

“Mommy!”

I dropped to my knees and hugged him.

His little arms wrapped around my neck.

For a moment, everything disappeared.

The custody battle.

The recordings.

The betrayal.

All I saw was my son.

The child I promised to protect.

That night, after Noah fell asleep, I sat across from Detective Harper.

I placed Ryan’s words on the table.

“Victoria wants revenge.”

The detective looked up.

“Did he explain why?”

“No.”

“Did he mention your family before?”

I shook my head.

“Never.”

Detective Harper opened his notebook.

“Then we need to find out what happened before you met Ryan.”

I felt uncomfortable.

Because I knew there were parts of my past I had never talked about.

Not because I was hiding something.

Because I thought they were gone.

Buried.

The next morning, I received a call from my mother.

“Emily?”

Her voice sounded nervous.

“What happened?”

I sat down.

“Mom, I need you to tell me the truth.”

A long silence followed.

“About what?”

“About the Carter family.”

My mother stopped breathing.

That told me everything.

“Mom?”

She sighed.

“I was hoping you would never have to know.”

My stomach tightened.

“Know what?”

She lowered her voice.

“Ryan didn’t meet you by accident.”

The room felt colder.

“What?”

“Emily…”

“No. Tell me.”

My mother took a deep breath.

“Seven years ago, before your wedding, Ryan’s father died.”

“I know.”

“No, you don’t.”

I listened.

“His death was connected to a business deal involving your father.”

My heart started racing.

“My father?”

“Yes.”

“That’s impossible.”

“Your father was blamed for something he didn’t do.”

I stood.

“What are you saying?”

My mother’s voice trembled.

“I’m saying Ryan’s family believed your father destroyed their company.”

I closed my eyes.

“But he didn’t.”

“No.”

“Then why?”

“Because someone made sure they believed it.”

A horrible thought entered my mind.

“Victoria.”

My mother went silent.

And that silence was confirmation.

I ended the call and immediately searched through old family documents.

Hidden inside a box my father left behind was a letter.

I had never opened it.

I thought it was personal.

Now I unfolded it.

The first line made my hands shake.

Emily, if anything happens to me, do not trust the Carter family.

My heart pounded.

I kept reading.

They think I betrayed them. But the truth will come out someday.

Then I saw a name.

A name that changed everything.

Victoria Carter was involved.

I dropped the paper.

Because suddenly I understood.

Victoria wasn’t just trying to steal Noah’s inheritance.

She had been waiting for years.

Waiting to punish my family.

And now she had found the perfect way.

My son.

The next morning, another message appeared on my phone.

Unknown number.

One sentence.

"Your father took everything from us. Now I’ll take everything from you."

I stared at the screen.

Then another message came.

A photo.

My blood froze.

It was Noah.

Taken yesterday.

May you like

Playing in the backyard.

Someone had been watching my house.
