Chapter 10 - THE NIGHT NOAH DISAPPEARED

The words wouldn’t leave my mind.
“She was planning to make Noah disappear.”
I replayed Ryan’s voice again and again.
Every mother has a fear buried somewhere deep inside.
A fear she refuses to say out loud.
Mine had always been simple.
Losing my child.
Not losing custody.
Not losing a court battle.
Losing him.
The next morning, I refused to let Noah out of my sight.
Not for a second.
I walked him to the bathroom.
I sat beside him while he ate breakfast.
I even carried him from one room to another when he asked.
He noticed.
Children always notice.
“Mommy?”
“Yes, baby?”
“Are you scared?”
The question hit me harder than anything else.
I forced a smile.
“No.”
But Noah knew.
He touched my hand.
“You’re doing the worried face.”
I almost cried.
Because my four-year-old was comforting me.
The child everyone called difficult.
The child they tried to make look dangerous.
The child they wanted a judge to take away.
That afternoon, Detective Harper arrived with more information.
“We found something on Victoria’s computer.”
I immediately stood.
“What?”
He placed a file on the table.
“Communication with someone outside the family.”
I opened it.
The first page was a payment record.
Large amounts of money.
Sent every month.
“To who?”
“We’re still investigating.”
Then he showed me a photo.
A man.
I didn’t recognize him.
“Who is he?”
Detective Harper looked serious.
“Someone who has experience with private guardianship arrangements.”
My stomach turned.
“Guardianship?”
“Yes.”
The word felt poisonous.
“She was already planning who would take Noah?”
“Yes.”
I looked toward the hallway.
Noah was coloring.
Completely unaware.
“Detective…”
He looked at me.
“What if we don’t stop her?”
His expression changed.
“Then she may try something desperate.”
That sentence followed me all day.
Something desperate.
That night, I checked every lock in the house.
Front door.
Back door.
Windows.
Everything.
At 11:45 p.m., I finally lay down beside Noah.
He was asleep.
Holding his favorite stuffed dinosaur.
For the first time in days, I almost felt safe.
Almost.
Then my phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
I opened it.
A picture.
My blood froze.
It was Noah.
Sleeping.
Taken from inside his bedroom.
My hands went numb.
Someone had been inside my house.
The message appeared underneath.
"You can’t protect him forever."
I jumped out of bed.
“Noah!”
He woke up crying.
“Mommy?”
I grabbed him.
I checked the room.
Closet.
Window.
Under the bed.
Nothing.
Then I saw something.
A small black device attached behind the bookshelf.
A camera.
Not mine.
Someone had planted it.
I called Detective Harper immediately.
When he arrived, he removed it carefully.
His face was serious.
“Emily…”
“What?”
“This wasn’t installed today.”
My stomach dropped.
“How long?”
He looked at the device.
“Several weeks.”
Several weeks.
That meant someone had been watching us.
Watching Noah.
Watching me.
And then Detective Harper found something else.
A tiny recording chip inside.
He played the latest audio.
At first, there was only silence.
Then a voice.
Victoria.
“She’ll break soon.”
Another voice answered.
A man.
“Then we take the boy.”
I stopped breathing.
Detective Harper looked at me.
Because we both heard the same thing.
This was no longer about custody.
May you like
This was a kidnapping plan.
And they were already preparing.
