Chapter 4 - THE SECRET BEHIND THE RECORDINGS

The police car disappeared at the end of the street.

I stood there holding Noah in my arms, watching the flashing lights fade into the distance.

My house was quiet again.

But this time, the silence felt different.

Before, silence meant danger.

Now, it meant I was finally seeing the truth.

The man I married was not the man I thought he was.

I looked down at my son.

His eyes were heavy.

His little fingers were still wrapped around my shirt.

“Mommy?”

“Yes, baby?”

“Am I in trouble?”

My heart broke.

I knelt down in front of him.

“Noah, listen to me.”

I held his cheeks gently.

“You did nothing wrong.”

“But Grandma said…”

“No.”

My voice became firm.

“Grandma was wrong.”

He looked at me carefully.

“Daddy too?”

That question hurt the most.

Because I didn’t know how to answer it.

I pulled him into my arms.

“I don’t know yet, sweetheart.”

And that was the truth.

Because deep down…

I was terrified of what I would find.

The police allowed me to keep the house overnight while they reviewed the evidence.

But I couldn’t sleep.

Every room felt different.

Every corner held a secret.

The security cameras that I once thought protected us now felt like eyes watching my family fall apart.

At 2:17 in the morning, I sat at the kitchen table with Ryan’s phone records open.

The officer had left a copy of the information they recovered.

Videos.

Messages.

Documents.

There were more than I expected.

Dozens of files.

Weeks of planning.

Then I saw something that made my blood run cold.

A folder.

Created three months earlier.

The name:

PROJECT NOAH

My hands trembled.

Project?

They called my son a project.

I opened it.

Inside were notes.

Dates.

Descriptions.

And plans.

“Document emotional instability.”

“Capture aggressive reactions.”

“Establish unsafe home environment.”

I covered my mouth.

They weren’t protecting Noah.

They were building a story.

A fake story.

A story where I was the problem.

Where I was the dangerous parent.

Where they were the heroes.

Then I found the messages.

Ryan:

"She gets emotional too easily. The judge will notice."

Diane:

"The boy needs to learn fear. Fear makes children easier to control."

I stopped reading.

My hands were shaking.

But then I saw another message.

A name.

Someone I didn’t recognize.

Unknown Number:

"The custody hearing cannot fail this time."

My heart stopped.

This time?

That meant this had happened before.

I grabbed my phone and called the detective.

He answered after several rings.

“Mrs. Carter?”

“I found something.”

A pause.

“What?”

“There’s a folder called Project Noah.”

The line went quiet.

“Don’t touch anything else.”

“Why?”

“Because if what you’re describing is real, this is bigger than family abuse.”

My stomach tightened.

“What does that mean?”

The detective lowered his voice.

“It means someone may have been planning this for a long time.”

I looked toward Noah’s bedroom.

My son was sleeping.

Safe.

For now.

“Detective…”

“Yes?”

“Who would do this?”

Another silence.

Then he said:

“That’s what we’re going to find out.”

I ended the call.

And that was when I heard it.

A noise outside.

A car door closing.

I froze.

Someone was standing outside my house.

I moved toward the window.

A black SUV was parked across the street.

The lights were off.

The engine was running.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message.

Unknown number.

I opened it.

And my entire body went cold.

"You should have stayed quiet, Emily."

A second message arrived.

"Now you’ll lose more than Noah."

I stared at the screen.

May you like

Because whoever was behind this…

They were watching me.
