Chapter 3 - THE PLAN TO TAKE MY SON AWAY

The room felt smaller.

The walls felt closer.

Because suddenly I wasn’t standing inside my home.

I was standing inside a trap.

My husband.

My mother-in-law.

The people I trusted most.

They had been collecting moments from my son’s life.

Not memories.

Not family videos.

Evidence.

I looked at Ryan.

“Why?”

He didn’t answer.

“Why would you record our child crying?”

His silence made me angrier than any excuse.

Diane stepped forward.

“You don’t understand.”

I laughed.

“No. I understand perfectly.”

“You’re emotional.”

“No.”

I pointed at the screen.

“I am watching my husband film my child being hurt.”

Ryan finally spoke.

“It wasn’t supposed to go this far.”

Those words hit me.

Not supposed to.

Meaning he knew.

Meaning there was a plan.

The officer looked at him.

“What wasn’t supposed to go this far?”

Ryan stayed quiet.

Diane looked nervous.

The officer walked closer.

“Mr. Carter, I’m asking you a question.”

Ryan swallowed.

“It was about custody.”

My heart stopped.

Custody.

The word I never expected to hear.

“What?”

Ryan looked away.

“We were concerned about Noah’s behavior.”

I stared at him.

“You were building a case against your own son?”

“No.”

“Against me.”

He didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

I held Noah tighter.

“Why?”

Ryan’s eyes finally met mine.

“You’ve been unstable.”

I almost couldn’t believe it.

“Unstable?”

“You get angry.”

“My child was chained to a wall!”

“You’re proving my point.”

I felt sick.

This wasn’t an argument.

This was manipulation.

Diane walked closer.

“We only wanted what was best.”

“For who?”

She didn’t answer.

Because we all knew.

Not Noah.

Not me.

Them.

The officer asked Ryan for the phone.

After a long pause…

Ryan handed it over.

The officer searched through the device.

Minutes passed.

Then his expression changed.

He looked at me.

“Mrs. Carter…”

My stomach tightened.

“Yes?”

“There are dozens of videos.”

I closed my eyes.

No.

The officer continued.

“And messages.”

Ryan looked up.

“Wait.”

The officer ignored him.

“Messages discussing how to make these incidents appear worse.”

Diane’s face turned white.

I felt Noah’s small hand holding mine.

My little boy.

A four-year-old.

Used as a weapon.

Against his own mother.

The officer played another video.

This time, Diane’s voice came from the phone.

“He needs to look afraid.”

Ryan answered.

“He will. The judge will believe us.”

My knees almost gave out.

The officer stopped the video.

Nobody spoke.

Then Noah whispered.

“Mommy…”

I looked down.

“Yes, baby?”

“Are they taking me away?”

That question destroyed me.

Because my son wasn’t afraid of the chain anymore.

He was afraid of losing me.

I pulled him into my arms.

“No one is taking you anywhere.”

Ryan looked at us.

And for the first time…

He looked ashamed.

But shame came too late.

The officer stood.

“Mr. Carter, you need to come with us and answer some questions.”

Diane immediately grabbed his arm.

“Ryan, tell them!”

But Ryan didn’t move.

He just stared at Noah.

Then he said something that made my blood run cold.

“Emily…”

His voice was barely above a whisper.

“You don’t know who started this.”

I froze.

“What does that mean?”

Ryan looked toward Diane.

Then toward the front door.

And before he walked away…

He said:

“My mother wasn’t the one who wanted Noah gone.”

The room went silent.

I stared after him.

Because suddenly I understood something.

Diane wasn’t the mastermind.

She was only following orders.

May you like

And the person behind everything…

Was still out there.
