Chapter 12 - THE PERSON I NEVER SUSPECTED

After Ryan’s confession, Detective Harper immediately investigated my legal team.

Within hours, we found the leak.

I expected someone I barely knew.

Someone outside my circle.

Someone obvious.

I was wrong.

The person feeding Victoria information was the last person I expected.

My own attorney.

Melissa Grant.

The woman who held my hand during every meeting.

The woman who told me:

“Emily, I promise I’ll protect you.”

She wasn’t protecting me.

She was reporting me.

When Detective Harper showed me the evidence, I couldn’t speak.

Emails.

Private messages.

Meeting summaries.

Everything.

Every strategy.

Every fear.

Sent directly to Victoria.

I whispered:

“How?”

Detective Harper answered.

“Money.”

I looked at the screen.

“How much?”

“Enough to make people forget right from wrong.”

I felt sick.

Because this wasn’t just one person.

It was a machine.

A group of people.

All working toward one goal.

Taking my son.

That evening, I went home earlier than expected.

Noah ran toward me.

“Mommy!”

I hugged him.

But this time…

I noticed something.

He looked behind me.

Like he expected someone else.

“What’s wrong, baby?”

He hesitated.

Then whispered:

“Grandma came here.”

My blood froze.

“When?”

“Yesterday.”

I looked at Detective Harper.

“We were watching the house.”

He immediately checked his phone.

No alert.

No report.

Impossible.

I knelt beside Noah.

“What did Grandma say?”

Noah looked scared.

“She said Mommy was going away.”

My heart shattered.

“What else?”

He looked down.

“She said Daddy would fix everything.”

I stood slowly.

Because Diane was not supposed to contact Noah.

Not after everything.

Detective Harper immediately called his team.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

No one spoke.

Only breathing.

Then a whisper.

“Come outside.”

I froze.

“Who is this?”

A child’s voice answered.

Noah’s voice.

“Mommy…”

My blood turned cold.

I looked toward Noah.

He was standing beside me.

Not on the phone.

The voice continued.

“Come outside if you want your real son back.”

The call ended.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then Detective Harper grabbed my arm.

“Emily, don’t go outside.”

But my eyes were already on the front door.

Because someone had just threatened my child.

And whoever it was…

They knew exactly how to break me.

Then Noah pointed toward the window.

“Mommy…”

I looked.

A black SUV was parked outside.

The same one from before.

The same vehicle that had been watching us.

And this time…

Someone was sitting inside.

May you like

Watching.

Waiting.
