Chapter 5 - The Truth About The Carter Empire

Emma spent the next week learning everything she should have known years ago.
The Carter family was not just wealthy.
They were influential.
Before her grandfather died, the Carter Foundation controlled investments across technology, medicine, real estate, and international finance.
But after his death…
Everything disappeared.
At least publicly.
The world believed the Carter fortune was gone.
Destroyed.
Lost.
But the truth was different.
The money was protected.
Hidden.
Waiting.
Waiting for Emma.
Victoria placed several documents in front of her.
“Your grandfather trusted very few people.”
Emma looked through the papers.
“Why didn’t he tell me?”
“Because he believed someone close to you would try to use you.”
Emma looked up.
“Andrew?”
Victoria was silent.
That silence answered everything.
Emma closed the folder.
“How did Andrew even meet me?”
Victoria looked at Daniel.
Daniel opened another file.
“Your first meeting was not accidental.”
Emma stopped.
“What?”
“Andrew knew your identity before you met.”
Her heart sank.
“No.”
Daniel continued.
“He approached you after researching your family.”
Emma felt sick.
The memories came back.
The coffee shop.
The conversation.
The way Andrew seemed to understand her immediately.
She thought it was chemistry.
She thought it was fate.
But maybe it was a plan.
“He targeted me.”
Victoria nodded.
“Yes.”
Emma sat down slowly.
The pain was different now.
Before, she thought Andrew stopped loving her.
Now she wondered if he ever loved her at all.
A tear fell.
Not because she missed him.
Because she missed the person she believed he was.
Victoria softened.
“Emma.”
She looked up.
“You have a choice.”
“What choice?”
“You can disappear.”
Emma listened.
“Or you can return.”
“To New York?”
“Yes.”
“Why would I do that?”
Victoria looked at her.
“Because running proves his story.”
Emma understood.
If she stayed hidden, Andrew controlled the narrative.
If she returned…
She could destroy his lies.
Emma looked at the documents.
At her grandfather’s letter.
At the life she never knew existed.
Then she said:
“When do we go back?”
---
Meanwhile…
Lila Summers walked into Andrew’s office.
She looked different.
Less confident.
More nervous.
Andrew noticed immediately.
“What happened?”
Lila closed the door.
“We need to talk.”
“I’m busy.”
“No.”
Her voice shook.
“This is about Emma.”
Andrew stopped.
“What about her?”
Lila looked around.
Then whispered:
“She knows.”
Andrew stared.
“Knows what?”
“Everything.”
A dangerous silence filled the room.
“How?”
Lila swallowed.
“Because I helped her.”
Andrew’s face changed.
“You did what?”
Lila stepped back.
“I thought she would leave you.”
Andrew walked closer.
“You were supposed to make her jealous.”
“I know.”
“You were supposed to make her emotional.”
“I know.”
“You were never supposed to make her discover the truth.”
Lila looked terrified.
“What are you going to do?”
Andrew looked out the window.
His expression became cold.
“I’m going to fix this.”
Lila whispered:
“And if she fights?”
Andrew turned.
“Then I make sure nobody believes her.”
---
Three days later…
Every news channel interrupted regular programming.
A single image appeared.
Emma Weston.
Standing beside Victoria Hale.
Not hiding.
Not broken.
Not unstable.
The headline shocked the entire country.
EMMA WESTON RETURNS TO NEW YORK WITH LEGAL TEAM AFTER FALSE CLAIMS AGAINST HER.
Andrew watched the television.
His face went pale.
Because Emma was smiling.
And he knew that smile.
It was not the smile of a woman who wanted forgiveness.
May you like
It was the smile of someone who had nothing left to lose.
