Chapter 12 - The Woman Behind the Door

Emma confronted Victoria that same night.

No warning.

No preparation.

She entered Victoria’s apartment and placed the documents on the table.

“Andrew told me something.”

Victoria looked up.

“What?”

“He said my grandfather investigated you.”

Silence.

The silence was enough.

Emma’s heart sank.

“You knew.”

Victoria closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

Emma stepped back.

“Why?”

“Because your grandfather suspected me.”

“Did he have a reason?”

Victoria looked at her.

“Yes.”

Emma waited.

“Tell me.”

Victoria sat down.

“My husband was involved.”

Emma froze.

“You were married?”

“Yes.”

“What does that have to do with my family?”

Victoria looked away.

“My husband worked for Charles Weston.”

Emma’s face changed.

“What?”

“He helped Charles move money.”

“Then why did you protect my family?”

Victoria whispered:

“Because I found out what they were doing.”

“And?”

“And my husband tried to stop me.”

Emma understood.

“He threatened you.”

“Yes.”

“What happened to him?”

Victoria looked at her.

“He disappeared.”

A heavy silence filled the room.

Emma whispered:

“Like my parents.”

Victoria nodded.

“Yes.”

---

At that exact moment…

Andrew received a call.

A number he had not seen in years.

He answered.

“Who is this?”

A woman’s voice replied.

“You’re finally asking the right questions.”

Andrew stood.

“Evelyn.”

The woman laughed softly.

“So you remember.”

“Where are you?”

“Somewhere your father never found me.”

Andrew’s hand tightened.

“You know the truth.”

“Yes.”

“About Emma’s parents?”

“Yes.”

“About my father?”

“Yes.”

Andrew lowered his voice.

“Tell me.”

The woman became silent.

Then said:

“Your father did not kill Emma’s parents because of money.”

Andrew frowned.

“Then why?”

A pause.

“Because they discovered something about you.”

Andrew froze.

“About me?”

“Yes.”

The call ended.

Andrew stood motionless.

Because for the first time…

He was not afraid of losing his company.

He was afraid of discovering who he really was.

---

The next morning, Emma arrived at Carter Foundation.

A security officer rushed toward her.

“Mrs. Weston.”

“What happened?”

“We found something.”

He handed her an envelope.

Inside was an old birth certificate.

Emma looked at it.

Then her entire world stopped.

Because the name written on the document was not hers.

Not Emma Carter.

Not Emma Weston.

Another name.

A name she had never seen before.

And beneath it…

A handwritten note.

The child you raised was never meant to inherit the Carter fortune.

Emma’s hands began shaking.

Because suddenly, the biggest secret was not about Andrew.

Not about Victoria.

May you like

Not about the Westons.

It was about herself.
