Chapter 13 - The Identity That Was Stolen

Emma stared at the birth certificate.
She read the name again.
And again.
But the words refused to make sense.
The person written on the document was not Emma Carter.
Not Emma Weston.
Not the woman she believed herself to be.
The room felt smaller.
The air became heavier.
She looked at Victoria.
The attorney who had spent weeks protecting her.
The woman who claimed to know the truth.
“Explain this.”
Victoria did not speak.
Emma’s voice became sharper.
“Explain this right now.”
Victoria slowly walked closer.
“Emma…”
“No.”
Emma held up the document.
“Not this time.”
Her hands were shaking.
“I spent my entire life believing I knew who I was.”
A tear fell.
“And everyone around me knew something I didn’t.”
Victoria looked devastated.
“I wanted to tell you.”
“But you didn’t.”
“I was waiting for the right moment.”
Emma laughed bitterly.
“There is never a right moment for someone to discover their entire identity is a lie.”
Victoria had no answer.
Because she knew Emma was right.
---
Daniel entered the room.
He immediately noticed the tension.
“What happened?”
Emma handed him the document.
His expression changed instantly.
“You found it.”
Emma looked at him.
“You knew?”
Daniel lowered his eyes.
“Yes.”
The betrayal hurt more than she expected.
“How many people knew?”
Nobody answered.
Emma looked around.
The silence told her everything.
Too many people.
Too many secrets.
She walked toward the window.
“So who am I?”
Victoria took a deep breath.
“The woman written on that document was your biological mother.”
Emma froze.
“My mother?”
“Yes.”
“Then who raised me?”
Victoria looked at her.
“Your aunt.”
Emma felt dizzy.
“My aunt?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Victoria’s eyes filled with regret.
“Because your real mother was forced to disappear.”
“By who?”
Victoria hesitated.
Emma turned.
“By who?”
Victoria finally answered.
“The Westons.”
---
Across the city…
Andrew received the same information.
But from a different source.
Evelyn.
The mysterious woman who had hidden for years.
They met inside an abandoned private library.
Andrew looked at her.
“You knew Emma was not a Carter.”
Evelyn nodded.
“Yes.”
“Then why did everyone call her Carter?”
“Because that was the name she needed to survive.”
Andrew frowned.
“Survive from what?”
Evelyn looked at him.
“From your family.”
Andrew became silent.
For the first time, he understood.
His father’s obsession.
The Carter fortune.
The secrets.
The manipulation.
Everything was connected.
“What did my father do?”
Evelyn looked directly into his eyes.
“He erased Emma’s real identity.”
Andrew felt sick.
“Why?”
“Because her bloodline gave her control over everything.”
Andrew whispered:
“The fortune.”
“No.”
Evelyn shook her head.
“Something much more valuable.”
“What?”
Evelyn leaned closer.
“Evidence.”
Andrew froze.
“Evidence of what?”
“Evidence that could destroy the Weston family forever.”
---
That night…
Emma returned to the Carter estate.
She could not sleep.
Everything she believed about herself was changing.
Her childhood.
Her family.
Her marriage.
Her entire identity.
Then she found something hidden inside the old necklace her mother left behind.
A tiny compartment.
Inside was a small memory card.
Emma inserted it into a computer.
A video appeared.
A woman appeared on the screen.
A woman Emma had never seen.
But somehow…
She felt connected to her.
The woman looked directly at the camera.
“Emma.”
Emma stopped breathing.
Because the woman knew her name.
“If you are watching this, then I am no longer able to protect you.”
Emma covered her mouth.
The woman continued.
“My name is Evelyn Carter.”
Emma froze.
Evelyn.
The same name everyone feared.
“I am your biological mother.”
Tears filled Emma’s eyes.
“I need you to know something.”
The woman looked terrified.
“The man you married is not the greatest danger.”
A pause.
“The greatest danger is the truth about your birth.”
The video suddenly glitched.
Then one final sentence appeared.
Your father is still alive.
Emma stood frozen.
Because that was impossible.
May you like
Her father had been dead for years.
