Chapter 7 - THE PAGE THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

The Sterling mansion had always been a place where secrets stayed buried.
Generations of the family had walked through those halls carrying things they never wanted the world to know.
Betrayals.
Mistakes.
Hidden agreements.
But every secret had one weakness.
Eventually, someone found the missing piece.
And Victoria Sterling had spent years protecting that missing piece.
The morning after Alexander discovered Clara Morgan's identity, Victoria arrived at the mansion without warning.
She did not ask permission.
She walked through the front doors like she still belonged there.
Like nothing had changed.
The security guards exchanged nervous looks.
Everyone knew she was no longer welcome.
But nobody dared stop her.
Because she was still a Sterling.
At least for now.
Alexander was waiting in the library.
Emily stood beside him.
Victoria noticed immediately.
Even now.
Even after everything.
Emily was beside him.
Not behind him.
Not beneath him.
Beside him.
And that angered her more than she expected.
“You look comfortable.”
Victoria's eyes moved toward Emily.
“Almost like you own this place.”
Alexander's expression hardened.
“Why are you here?”
Victoria smiled.
“To finish what I started.”
Emily looked at the folder in Victoria's hand.
“What is that?”
Victoria placed it on the table.
“The truth.”
Alexander did not move.
“You already showed me enough lies.”
Victoria laughed softly.
“You still think I am the enemy.”
She opened the folder.
“I am the only person trying to protect you from what your father did.”
Alexander looked down.
Inside was a single document.
An old legal page.
With his father's signature.
His eyes narrowed.
“What is this?”
Victoria leaned closer.
“The page Daniel never found.”
The room became silent.
Alexander picked it up.
Emily watched his face carefully.
She saw the moment his expression changed.
Not anger.
Not fear.
Something worse.
Confusion.
“What does it say?”
Alexander did not answer immediately.
He read the page again.
Then again.
Finally, he looked at Victoria.
“You knew?”
She smiled.
“Yes.”
“How long?”
“Twenty years.”
Emily felt her stomach tighten.
“You kept this from him for twenty years?”
Victoria ignored her.
“I was protecting the family.”
Alexander's voice became colder.
“No.”
“You were protecting yourself.”
For the first time, Victoria's smile disappeared.
Because she knew he was right.
---
The document revealed something nobody expected.
Richard Sterling had not hidden Clara because he was ashamed of her.
He had hidden her because he was afraid.
Clara was not simply his firstborn child.
She was the person he believed could destroy the Sterling empire.
Not because she was dangerous.
Because she had the strongest claim to everything.
The company.
The assets.
The family trust.
The entire Sterling legacy.
But there was another sentence written at the bottom of the page.
A sentence that changed the meaning of everything.
“If my children discover the truth, they must decide whether this family deserves to survive.”
Alexander stared at the words.
“What does this mean?”
Victoria remained silent.
Emily looked at her.
“You know.”
Victoria looked away.
And that was the first time Alexander saw hesitation in her.
Not guilt.
Fear.
“What are you hiding?”
Victoria stood.
“You should ask Clara.”
Then she walked away.
---
That evening, Alexander met Clara at a quiet restaurant outside the city.
No security.
No assistants.
No business partners.
Just two people connected by a secret neither chose.
Clara arrived nervous.
“You found the page.”
Alexander nodded.
“Yes.”
She closed her eyes.
“I was hoping you never would.”
“Why?”
Because the answer hurt.
Because he already knew something was wrong.
Clara looked at him.
“Because your father didn't abandon my mother.”
Alexander waited.
“He protected her.”
The words shocked him.
“Protected her from what?”
Clara looked down.
May you like
“From Victoria.”
