Chapter 10 - THE GHOST OF THE STERLING LEGACY

For the first time in decades, the Sterling family name was no longer controlled by fear.

It was controlled by questions.

The world wanted answers.

Investors wanted stability.

The board wanted reassurance.

And Alexander Sterling wanted the truth.

But the truth had become something dangerous.

Because every answer revealed another mystery.

The unknown caller's words continued repeating in Victoria's mind.

"I want what belongs to me."

She had spent her entire life believing she knew every secret inside the Sterling family.

But now she understood something.

She had only known the secrets that benefited her.

There were others.

Secrets even her father had hidden from her.

---

Meanwhile, Alexander sat inside his office reviewing every document connected to Richard Sterling.

The walls were covered with old family photographs.

His father.

His mother.

Victoria.

Himself.

And now Clara.

A family portrait that had never existed.

Emily entered quietly.

She placed a cup of coffee beside him.

“You have been here for hours.”

Alexander didn't look away from the documents.

“I keep thinking about how much I didn't know.”

Emily sat across from him.

“You knew what your father wanted you to know.”

“That doesn't make it easier.”

She watched him carefully.

“You feel betrayed.”

Alexander finally looked at her.

“Yes.”

“But not only by him.”

Emily understood.

“By yourself.”

He nodded.

“For twenty years, I built an empire believing I understood the foundation beneath me.”

He looked at the papers.

“But the foundation was cracked from the beginning.”

Emily reached for his hand.

“A cracked foundation can still be repaired.”

Alexander gave a small smile.

“You always find a way to make impossible things sound simple.”

“No.”

Emily smiled softly.

“I just remind you that not everything broken has to be destroyed.”

---

That afternoon, Daniel Hayes arrived with new information.

His expression immediately told Alexander something was wrong.

“What happened?”

Daniel placed a folder on the desk.

“We found the person connected to the unknown call.”

Alexander opened the file.

Inside was a photograph.

A man in his late forties.

Dark hair.

Cold expression.

A name written beneath the image.

Nathaniel Cross.

Emily looked at the picture.

“Who is he?”

Daniel answered carefully.

“That is the question.”

Alexander looked confused.

“What do you mean?”

“Because according to public records, Nathaniel Cross does not exist.”

The room became silent.

“No identity.”

“No birth records.”

“No official history.”

Alexander stared at the photograph.

“Then how do we know about him?”

Daniel hesitated.

“Because your father knew him.”

---

The discovery changed everything.

Richard Sterling had not only hidden Clara.

He had hidden Nathaniel.

Another person connected to the family's past.

Alexander spent the next several hours searching through archived company files.

Then he found something.

A forgotten business partnership.

Twenty-five years earlier.

Sterling Industries had worked with a private investment group.

The leader's name was Nathaniel Cross.

But the partnership ended suddenly.

No explanation.

No public statement.

Just disappearance.

Alexander looked at the date.

The same year Clara was born.

The same year his father rewrote the inheritance documents.

Everything connected.

---

Victoria received another message that night.

A photograph appeared on her phone.

It showed Richard Sterling standing beside Nathaniel Cross.

Her hands started shaking.

A second message followed.

"You remember him."

Victoria stared at the screen.

Because she did.

She remembered the man who came to their house years ago.

The man her father called a friend.

The man who disappeared after a terrible argument.

The man who knew the truth about the Sterling empire.

She typed quickly.

"How are you alive?"

The reply came immediately.

"Because your father wanted everyone to believe I wasn't."

Victoria felt a cold sensation.

For the first time in her life...

May you like

She was afraid.
