Chapter 1 - THE NIGHT THE EMPIRE TREMBLED

The sound of breaking glass echoed through the Sterling family mansion like a gunshot.

For a moment, everyone inside the grand hall stopped breathing.

The luxury estate had always been a symbol of perfection.

A place where every marble floor shined, every painting had history, and every guest understood that the Sterling name represented power.

But that night, the illusion of perfection was shattered.

Literally.

Pieces of crystal frames and broken glass covered the white marble floor.

Among the ruins were photographs.

Old family portraits.

Handwritten letters.

Small treasures that could never be replaced.

And in the middle of it all sat Emily Sterling.

Her hands trembled as she carefully picked up a torn photograph from the floor.

It was the last picture she had with her mother before she passed away.

The corner was cracked.

The frame was destroyed.

But Emily still held it like it was the most valuable thing in the world.

“Are you finally going to admit it?”

A cold voice came from above her.

Victoria Sterling stood there wearing a designer gown worth more than most people earned in a year.

She looked flawless.

Perfect makeup.

Perfect hair.

Perfect smile.

But her eyes carried nothing except cruelty.

“You were never meant to be part of this family.”

Emily slowly looked up.

She had heard those words before.

Many times.

But somehow, hearing them while surrounded by the remains of her memories hurt differently.

Victoria was not just insulting her.

She was trying to erase everything that proved Emily belonged.

“You always played the victim,” Victoria continued.

“You married my brother and suddenly thought you deserved the Sterling name.”

Emily said nothing.

She knew arguing with Victoria never helped.

The woman did not want a conversation.

She wanted control.

She wanted someone to break.

Victoria stepped closer.

Her expensive heels clicked against the marble floor.

“You really believed he would choose you forever?”

Emily’s expression changed slightly.

That was the one thing Victoria wanted.

A reaction.

A sign that she had found the weakness.

“You think because Alexander loves you, you are untouchable?”

Victoria laughed softly.

“You don't understand this family.”

“This family belongs to blood.”

Emily looked at the broken photograph in her hand.

“My husband chose me.”

Those four words made Victoria's smile disappear.

Only for a second.

But Emily noticed.

Because that was the truth Victoria hated the most.

Alexander Sterling had built one of the largest investment empires in the country.

He was known as a man who never lost.

A man who could negotiate billion-dollar deals without raising his voice.

A man who trusted almost nobody.

Except his wife.

And Victoria knew that.

Which was exactly why she wanted Emily gone.

“You still don't understand,” Victoria whispered.

“Alexander is my brother.”

“He will always protect his family.”

Emily slowly stood.

“You mean he will protect you even after what you did?”

The room became silent.

Victoria's expression tightened.

“What are you talking about?”

Emily looked toward the ceiling.

At the small black camera hidden above the entrance.

Victoria followed her eyes.

Then froze.

For the first time that night, fear appeared on her face.

“You recorded everything?”

Emily didn't answer.

She didn't need to.

The mansion had security cameras everywhere.

Alexander had installed them years ago after a business rival attempted to break into the property.

Every hallway.

Every entrance.

Every room.

Including the grand hall.

Victoria looked around.

The confidence she had carried moments earlier began disappearing.

“No one will believe you.”

Her voice was quieter now.

“You think a camera changes anything?”

Emily looked at her calmly.

“It does when the person you attacked owns the company that installed the entire security system.”

Victoria's face became pale.

Because she suddenly understood.

This was no longer a family argument.

This was evidence.

And evidence was something Alexander Sterling valued more than anyone.

Suddenly, the sound of footsteps echoed from the patio entrance.

Everyone turned.

The glass doors opened.

Alexander Sterling walked inside.

He was still wearing the dark suit from his business meeting.

His expression was calm.

Too calm.

But the moment his eyes landed on Emily sitting among the broken memories...

Everything changed.

The powerful businessman disappeared.

The husband remained.

“Emily.”

His voice was low.

She looked at him.

For the first time that night, she allowed herself to cry.

Not because she was weak.

Because she finally felt safe.

Alexander walked toward her.

Slowly.

Every step heavier than the last.

He saw the broken photographs.

The damaged heirlooms.

The tears on his wife's face.

Then he looked at his sister.

Victoria immediately stepped forward.

“Alexander, you misunderstand.”

He didn't respond.

“I was trying to teach her a lesson.”

A dangerous silence filled the room.

“A lesson?”

Alexander repeated.

Victoria forced a smile.

“She needs to understand her place.”

The temperature in the room seemed to drop.

Alexander looked at the woman who had shared his childhood.

His sister.

The person he once trusted.

Then he looked back at his wife.

The woman who had stood beside him through every difficult moment.

And he made his decision.

“I know exactly where my wife belongs.”

Everyone waited.

Alexander reached down and helped Emily stand.

“Beside me.”

Victoria's confidence disappeared.

Because she knew.

She had made the one mistake she could never undo.

She had attacked the person Alexander Sterling valued most.

His family.

His wife.

His home.

May you like

And Alexander never allowed anyone to destroy what was his.
