Chapter 9 - THE PERSON BEHIND THE MASK
David chased the stranger through the cemetery.
Branches hit his face.
His shoes slipped on wet grass.
“Stop!”
The person kept running.
Finally, near the old shed, David caught up.
He grabbed the stranger’s jacket.
The person turned.
And David froze.
“Impossible.”
The stranger removed the hood.
It was someone David knew.
Someone he never expected.
“Why?”
The person looked away.
“I didn’t have a choice.”
David stepped closer.
“You stole my daughter’s records.”
“I was trying to protect her.”
“Protect her?”
David’s voice shook.
“You helped them hide the truth.”
The person started crying.
“I was forced.”
“By who?”
Silence.
Then the answer came.
“Michael.”
David clenched his jaw.
“Tell me everything.”
The person looked toward the shed.
“Twelve years ago, Michael found out about Blair’s inheritance.”
“And?”
“He knew he couldn’t take it directly.”
“So he created a plan.”
David listened.
“He changed records. He manipulated people. He made sure Blair’s identity disappeared.”
“Why?”
“Because the money would only belong to Blair if nobody knew who she really was.”
David looked confused.
“Then who is she?”
The person opened the stolen file.
Inside was one final document.
A DNA report.
David’s hands shook as he read it.
The truth was there.
The truth everyone had been hiding.
Blair wasn’t just connected to the Harper family.
She was connected to something much bigger.
Something Michael had spent years protecting.
Then David heard a sound.
A car door closing.
He looked toward the road.
Michael’s SUV was parked there.
Michael stood beside it.
