Chapter 10 - THE LAST WARNING

Michael walked slowly toward them.
No panic.
No fear.
Just confidence.
David held the DNA report tightly.
“You knew.”
Michael stopped.
“Yes.”
David stared at him.
“You knew the truth about Blair.”
Michael looked at the little girl standing beside Martha.
“Yes.”
“Then why did you hide it?”
Michael sighed.
“Because people do terrible things when money is involved.”
David laughed bitterly.
“You’re talking about yourself.”
Michael didn’t deny it.
“That money was never supposed to be hers.”
David stepped forward.
“It was her family’s.”
Michael looked at Blair.
“She has no idea what she is.”
David moved between them.
“She’s a child.”
Michael’s expression changed slightly.
“And that is why she’s dangerous.”
David felt anger explode.
“She’s dangerous?”
“Yes.”
Michael lowered his voice.
“Because children tell the truth.”
The words made David realize something.
Blair wasn’t the target because of money.
She was the target because she knew something.
Something Michael couldn’t control.
David looked at Blair.
“Sweetheart, what did Claire tell you about the shed?”
Blair hesitated.
Then she whispered:
“She told me never to open the little door.”
David looked at Michael.
“What little door?”
Nobody answered.
Then Blair pointed behind the shed.
“There.”
Everyone turned.
Behind the old wooden wall was another hidden entrance.
One nobody had found.
Michael’s face finally changed.
For the first time…
he looked afraid.
David walked toward the door.
“What’s inside?”
Michael stepped forward.
“Don’t open it.”
David stopped.
“Why?”
Michael stared at him.
Because behind that door…
was the one thing he had spent twelve years trying to erase.
And when David finally opened it…
May you like
he would discover the real reason Blair had been hidden away.
