Chapter 5 - THE TRUTH CLAIRE TRIED TO BURY
David refused to leave the cemetery.
Not until he knew the truth.
Claire sat inside the police station.
She looked exhausted.
Broken.
But David no longer believed appearances.
“Why?”
Claire looked up.
“David…”
“Why was my daughter’s name in that notebook?”
Tears filled her eyes.
“I can explain.”
“Then explain.”
She looked down.
“I made mistakes.”
“Mistakes?”
David laughed bitterly.
“You wrote plans about my child.”
Claire covered her face.
“I never wanted Blair hurt.”
“Then what did you want?”
Silence.
Then Claire whispered:
“Money.”
David stared.
“What?”
She looked away.
“Thomas found out about an inheritance.”
David felt sick.
“What inheritance?”
“The Harper family trust.”
His expression changed.
“That money belongs to Blair.”
Claire said nothing.
And that was the answer.
David walked away.
But before he reached the door, Claire spoke.
“David.”
He stopped.
“You think you know everything.”
He slowly turned.
“What does that mean?”
Claire’s eyes filled with fear.
“Thomas wasn’t working alone.”
David froze.
“Who else?”
Claire looked toward the window.
Outside, a black SUV was parked.
A man stepped out.
David recognized him immediately.
Someone he had trusted.
Someone who had been part of Blair’s life since she was born.
His own attorney.
Michael Grant.
Claire whispered:
“He’s the one who planned everything.”
David stared through the glass.
Michael looked back at him.
Then smiled.
Because he knew…
the real secret had not been found yet.
