Chapter 6 - THE MAN WHO CONTROLLED EVERYTHING

David stood behind the police station window, watching Michael Grant step out of the black SUV.

For ten years, Michael had been the man David trusted with everything.

His finances.

His legal documents.

His family’s future.

He had been there when Blair was born.

He had held her as a baby.

He had even promised David:

“I’ll protect your family like it’s my own.”

Now David wondered if those words had always been a lie.

The police officer walked toward him.

“Mr. Harper, do you know that man?”

David didn’t answer immediately.

Then he said:

“Yes.”

The officer looked concerned.

“Who is he?”

“My attorney.”

The officer’s eyebrows lifted.

“Your attorney?”

David nodded slowly.

“And apparently… the person behind all of this.”

Across the room, Claire sat quietly.

David walked toward her.

“You knew about Michael.”

Claire looked away.

“Not everything.”

“But you knew something.”

She didn’t respond.

David slammed his hand on the table.

“My daughter was used as part of some plan, and you’re telling me you don’t know?”

Claire started crying.

“I was scared.”

“Scared of what?”

She looked at him.

“Michael.”

The room went silent.

David leaned closer.

“Why would you be afraid of him?”

Claire took a deep breath.

“Because Michael doesn’t lose.”

David stared.

“What does that mean?”

“It means he always has a backup plan.”

Before David could ask more, the door opened.

Michael walked inside.

Calm.

Confident.

Almost relaxed.

“David.”

The sound of his voice made David’s fists tighten.

“Michael.”

Michael smiled.

“I heard there was a misunderstanding.”

David stepped forward.

“A misunderstanding?”

He placed the notebook on the table.

“Your handwriting?”

Michael looked at it.

Then laughed softly.

“That’s ridiculous.”

The officer watched him carefully.

“Do you deny knowing about the hidden room?”

Michael looked around.

Then smiled.

“I deny everything.”

David noticed something.

Michael wasn’t nervous.

Not even a little.

That scared him more than anger.

Because innocent people usually tried to prove they were innocent.

Michael acted like he already knew the ending.

Then Michael leaned closer to David.

Quiet enough that nobody else heard.

“You should stop digging.”

David stared at him.

“Or what?”

Michael smiled.

“Or you’ll discover why Blair was never supposed to know who she really is.”

David’s heart stopped.

“What did you say?”

Michael walked away.

But those words stayed behind.

Because suddenly David understood.

The secret behind the shed…

May you like

was never about what was hidden there.

It was about who Blair really was.
