Chapter 11 - THE ROOM THAT HELD THE TRUTH

David placed his hand on the hidden door.

For twelve years, Michael Grant had controlled every piece of information.

Every document.

Every story.

Every person who knew too much.

But now…

there was one thing Michael could no longer control.

The truth.

“David,” Michael said firmly.

“Don’t do this.”

David slowly turned around.

“Why?”

Michael didn’t answer.

“Why are you so afraid of what’s behind this door?”

For the first time, Michael’s calm expression disappeared.

Because David saw it.

Fear.

Real fear.

The officer stepped closer.

“Open it.”

David pulled the handle.

The old lock broke.

The door opened with a loud metal sound.

Inside was a small hidden room.

Not like the first one.

This room was different.

It wasn’t filled with documents.

It was filled with memories.

A small bed.

Children’s drawings.

Old photographs.

And hundreds of letters.

David walked inside slowly.

His eyes moved across the walls.

Then he stopped.

There were pictures of Blair.

From when she was a baby.

One year old.

Two years old.

Three years old.

Photos David had never seen.

His hands started shaking.

“Where did you get these?”

Nobody answered.

Then Martha picked up one of the letters.

She opened it.

Her face changed.

“What?”

David looked at her.

“What does it say?”

Martha handed it to him.

The letter was written by a woman.

A woman named Emily Carter.

The name meant nothing to David.

Until he read the first line.

“Dear Blair, if you ever find this, please know that I never stopped loving you.”

David froze.

“Who is Emily Carter?”

Michael stayed silent.

David turned toward him.

“Answer me.”

Michael looked away.

“She was Blair’s biological mother.”

The world stopped.

David felt like the ground disappeared beneath him.

“No.”

Michael looked at him.

“You wanted the truth.”

David grabbed his shirt.

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

“You knew Blair had another mother?”

Michael didn’t fight back.

“Yes.”

David pushed him away.

“Where is she?”

Silence.

Then Michael said:

“She’s been looking for Blair for twelve years.”

David stared.

“And you stopped her.”

Michael didn’t answer.

May you like

But everyone knew.

Because his silence was enough.
