Chapter 7 - THE GIRL WHO REMEMBERED EVERYTHING

David took Blair home that night.
But he couldn’t sleep.
Every time he closed his eyes, he saw the notebook.
The hidden room.
Michael’s warning.
And one question kept repeating in his mind.
What did Blair know?
The next morning, David sat beside his daughter.
“Blair.”
She looked up from her cereal.
“Yes, Daddy?”
“Can I ask you something?”
She nodded.
“Did Claire ever tell you not to talk about the shed?”
Blair became quiet.
“Yes.”
“What exactly did she say?”
Blair held her spoon tightly.
“She said some people take children away when they find out too much.”
David felt anger rise inside him.
“Who said that?”
“Claire.”
“Did she ever mention Michael?”
Blair looked confused.
Then slowly nodded.
“Sometimes.”
David froze.
“Sometimes?”
“She talked to him on the phone.”
“What did she say?”
Blair looked down.
“I don’t remember everything.”
“It’s okay.”
She closed her eyes.
“She said… ‘The girl doesn’t know yet.’”
David felt cold.
“The girl?”
Blair nodded.
“And she said something else.”
“What?”
Blair looked scared.
“She said your family should have disappeared years ago.”
David stood up.
He had heard enough.
He called Martha.
Then the police.
But before he could finish explaining, his phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
“Hello?”
A voice spoke.
A voice he didn’t recognize.
“David Harper?”
“Yes.”
“You need to listen carefully.”
“Who is this?”
“Someone who knows what Michael Grant is hiding.”
David looked at Blair.
“What do you want?”
The voice became serious.
“Find the old cemetery records.”
“What records?”
“The ones from twelve years ago.”
David frowned.
“Why?”
The person paused.
Then said:
“Because Blair Harper was never the name written on her birth certificate.”
The call ended.
David stood frozen.
Then he slowly looked at his daughter.
The little girl he had raised.
The child he loved more than anything.
