Chapter 13 - BLAIR’S MEMORY

David knelt beside his daughter.

“Blair.”

She looked scared.

“Do you remember something?”

The little girl shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

Emily moved closer.

“It’s okay.”

Blair looked at her.

“I remember a room.”

David felt his heart tighten.

“What room?”

“A dark room.”

Everyone listened.

“There was a woman crying.”

Emily covered her mouth.

“What woman?”

Blair closed her eyes.

“She said my name.”

David whispered:

“Your name?”

Blair nodded.

“She said… ‘I’m sorry, Blair. I tried.’”

Emily started crying.

Because she knew.

That was her.

David held Blair’s hand.

“What happened after that?”

Blair became quiet.

Then she whispered:

“Michael came in.”

The entire room froze.

“What did he do?”

Blair looked terrified.

“He told her she would never see me again.”

Emily broke down.

David looked at Michael with anger.

“You took a child from her mother.”

Michael said nothing.

The police moved closer.

But then Michael laughed.

A cold, empty laugh.

“You still don’t understand.”

David stared.

“What now?”

Michael looked at Blair.

“She remembers everything.”

David frowned.

“So?”

Michael smiled.

“Because she was the only witness.”

Witness?

David felt confused.

“Witness to what?”

Michael didn’t answer.

Emily did.

Her voice was shaking.

“Twelve years ago…”

She looked at David.

“Blair saw something.”

“What?”

Emily swallowed.

“She saw Michael hurt someone.”

The room became silent.

David looked at Blair.

“Who?”

Blair’s eyes filled with tears.

“My grandfather.”

David felt sick.

Michael had not only stolen an inheritance.

He had buried a crime.

The officer immediately grabbed Michael.

But Michael suddenly pulled away.

Everyone moved.

May you like

And in the chaos…

he ran.
