Chapter 4 - THE MAN WHO CARRIED THE GUILT

Camila spent the entire night awake.

The hotel room was quiet.

Too quiet.

Isabella was sleeping peacefully on the large bed.

But Camila sat by the window, staring at the city lights.

Four years.

Four years of believing she had been abandoned.

Four years of telling her daughter that some people leave because they have no choice.

Four years of carrying pain that might never have belonged to her.

She looked at the photograph again.

Daniel’s smile.

The same smile she remembered.

The same man who used to hold her hand and promise they would build a family together.

Before everything disappeared.

Before the silence.

Before the unanswered messages.

Before the loneliness.

A knock interrupted her thoughts.

Camila immediately stood up.

She looked toward the door.

Her heart raced.

But this time, she wasn’t afraid.

She was angry.

She opened the door.

And there he was.

The man from the park.

Adrian Hayes.

The man who had placed the envelope beside her when she had nothing left.

He looked different now.

Not like the powerful businessman everyone feared.

Just like a tired man who hadn’t slept in years.

Camila stared at him.

“You knew.”

Adrian remained silent.

“You knew who I was.”

“Yes.”

“You knew about Daniel.”

“Yes.”

Her eyes filled with frustration.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?”

Adrian looked down.

“Because I didn’t know if I had the right.”

Camila laughed bitterly.

“The right?”

“My entire life was destroyed.”

“My daughter grew up without a father.”

“And you thought you didn’t have the right to tell me the truth?”

Adrian accepted every word.

Because he knew she was right.

“I deserve your anger.”

Camila looked away.

“Why did you help me?”

Adrian took a breath.

“Because I saw my brother in your daughter.”

Camila froze.

Adrian continued.

“When Daniel was young, he believed people mattered more than money.”

“He believed family meant protecting those who needed you.”

“Then our family destroyed that belief.”

His voice became quieter.

“And I let it happen.”

Camila studied him.

“You knew?”

“I knew something was wrong.”

“But I didn’t know the entire truth until years later.”

Adrian looked at Isabella sleeping inside the room.

“I spent years believing Daniel walked away from you.”

“Then I found documents proving someone had lied.”

Camila crossed her arms.

“Who?”

Adrian hesitated.

That hesitation told her everything.

“You know.”

He looked at her.

“My father.”

The words felt heavy.

Adrian Hayes.

A billionaire.

A man with influence.

A man who could buy almost anything.

Except forgiveness.

“My father believed Daniel was destroying the family.”

“He thought you were a distraction.”

“A woman from a normal background who would ruin the Hayes legacy.”

Camila’s hands tightened.

“So he separated us.”

Adrian nodded.

“He manipulated everything.”

“He paid people to hide messages.”

“He created false documents.”

“He made Daniel believe you left him.”

“And he made you believe Daniel abandoned you.”

Camila felt tears falling.

Not from weakness.

From years of unanswered pain finally finding a name.

“What happened to Daniel?”

Adrian looked away.

“That’s the hardest part.”

“What do you mean?”

“He found out the truth.”

Camila stepped closer.

“And?”

Adrian’s face changed.

“He was coming to find you.”

A silence filled the room.

“Then why isn’t he here?”

Adrian swallowed.

“Because the night he left to find you
”

“He disappeared.”

Camila felt cold.

“No.”

“We searched everywhere.”

“Police.”

“Private investigators.”

“Everyone.”

“Nothing.”

Camila shook her head.

“You’re saying Daniel is alive?”

Adrian looked at her.

“I believe he is.”

The answer was both hope and pain.

Because hope was dangerous.

Hope could destroy you.

Camila looked at Isabella.

She wanted to believe.

She wanted to believe her daughter could meet the father she had only seen in dreams.

But she had learned one thing.

Life could take everything away without warning.

Adrian stepped back.

“I don’t expect you to forgive me.”

“I don’t even expect you to trust me.”

“But please
”

He looked at Isabella.

“Let me help you find the truth.”

Camila didn’t answer.

Because before she could decide

Her phone started ringing.

Unknown number.

She answered.

A cold voice spoke.

“Stop searching for Daniel.”

Camila froze.

“Who is this?”

“You don’t know me.”

“But I know you.”

The voice became darker.

“If you continue digging into the past
”

“You will lose more than you already have.”

The call ended.

Camila slowly lowered the phone.

Adrian’s expression changed.

He recognized the fear on her face.

“What happened?”

Camila looked at him.

“Someone knows.”

Adrian’s eyes hardened.

May you like

“And now
”

“They know you know.”
