CHAPTER 9 — THE TRUTH HIDDEN IN THE RECORDINGS

Sarah felt like the entire world was collapsing.

The courtroom was no longer about what Victoria did.

It was about what Victoria had created.

A fake story.

A fake reality.

And somehow...

It looked believable.

Her lawyer leaned closer.

"Don't panic."

But Sarah couldn't stop looking at the photos.

They showed Ethan crying.

Looking scared.

Looking alone.

Images that made her look like a terrible mother.

Except they weren't real.

She knew her son.

She knew those moments never happened.

The judge looked at Daniel.

"Where did you get these?"

Daniel answered confidently.

"From Victoria."

Sarah almost laughed.

Of course.

Of course he would say that.

The two of them were working together.

But then Daniel made his biggest mistake.

He said something only Victoria could know.

"Ethan was always afraid when Sarah left him alone."

Sarah turned.

"What did you say?"

Daniel stopped.

The judge looked at him.

"Mr. Cross?"

Daniel stayed quiet.

Sarah stood.

"How do you know that?"

Nobody answered.

Sarah looked at Victoria.

Then at Daniel.

"You were never investigating me."

Her voice grew stronger.

"You were watching us."

Victoria looked away.

And that was the answer.

The judge ordered a temporary recess.

Sarah walked outside.

Her lawyer followed.

"We need more evidence."

Sarah nodded.

"I know."

Then she stopped.

Her eyes narrowed.

"Wait."

"What?"

Sarah looked back toward the courtroom.

"The pictures."

"What about them?"

"They were edited."

Her lawyer frowned.

"How do you know?"

"Because Ethan had that shirt on."

"What?"

"The blue dinosaur shirt."

Sarah's voice shook.

"He only wore it one day."

She looked at her lawyer.

"The day I took him to the park."

Her lawyer pulled out the photo.

Sarah stared.

"Look at the background."

He examined it.

Then his expression changed.

"That's impossible."

"What?"

"The background is from your old neighborhood."

Sarah nodded.

"But Ethan is wearing the same shirt from the park."

Her lawyer understood.

Someone had taken different moments...

And combined them.

They weren't proving the truth.

They were building a lie.

That evening, Sarah went home and searched everything.

Old phones.

Old computers.

Old files.

Anything.

Then she found something.

An old security camera system.

One camera had been disconnected.

But the storage was still there.

Sarah opened the recordings.

Most files were empty.

Until one date appeared.

The night Ethan was locked outside.

Sarah clicked.

The screen loaded.

Her heart started racing.

The video showed Victoria walking toward the door.

Holding something.

Then she opened the door.

Pushed Ethan outside.

And locked it.

Sarah covered her mouth.

She finally had proof.

But then...

A second figure appeared on the recording.

Someone standing behind Victoria.

Someone who had been there the entire time.

Sarah leaned closer to the screen.

The person turned slightly.

And Sarah recognized him.

Daniel.

Her blood went cold.

Because he wasn't just helping Victoria.

He was there.

He was part of it.

Suddenly, the screen went black.

The power had been cut.

Sarah turned around.

Someone was inside the house.

May you like

And Ethan was upstairs.

Alone.
