Chapter 2 - THE WOMAN WHO CAME RUNNING

Sarah Carter had never driven that fast in her life.
Her hands gripped the steering wheel so tightly that her knuckles turned white.
Something felt wrong.
She couldn't explain it.
A mother’s instinct didn’t always come with logic. Sometimes it was just a sudden feeling in the middle of your chest telling you that your child needed you.
And Sarah had felt it twenty minutes ago.
She had been sitting at the airport, waiting for her flight to leave, when she suddenly looked at her phone.
A picture of Ethan appeared on her screen.
Her little boy was smiling.
But instead of making her happy, it made her heart ache.
She didn’t know why.
Then she made a decision.
She canceled the trip.
She rented a car.
She drove home.
And now, as she turned onto her street, her heart stopped.
Snow covered the entire neighborhood.
The houses looked peaceful.
Quiet.
Too quiet.
Then she saw something.
A small figure outside her house.
At first, she thought it was a pile of blankets.
Then the figure moved.
"No..."
Sarah slammed the brakes.
The car stopped in the middle of the driveway.
"Ethan!"
She jumped out before the engine was even off.
She ran through the snow barefoot in her thin travel shoes.
"Ethan!"
The little boy slowly lifted his head.
For a second, he didn’t believe what he was seeing.
"Mommy?"
Sarah dropped to her knees.
"Oh my God..."
She grabbed him and pulled him into her arms.
Her son was freezing.
His clothes were wet.
His face was red from the cold.
"What happened? What happened to you?"
Ethan buried his face into her coat.
"Mommy..."
His voice trembled.
"She put me outside."
Sarah froze.
"What?"
"Victoria put me outside and locked the door."
The world seemed to stop.
Sarah looked at the glass door.
Behind it stood Victoria.
Watching.
Not scared.
Not sorry.
Just watching.
Sarah slowly stood up.
Her expression changed.
The woman who had been crying seconds ago disappeared.
Now there was only a mother.
A mother who had found her child abandoned in the snow.
Victoria opened the door.
"Oh, Sarah."
Her voice was fake.
"You’re home early."
Sarah stared at her.
"You left my son outside?"
Victoria sighed.
"Don't make this dramatic."
"Dramatic?"
Sarah’s voice shook.
"My four-year-old son was sitting in freezing snow."
"He was throwing a tantrum."
Sarah couldn't believe what she was hearing.
"A tantrum?"
"Yes. He was being difficult."
Sarah looked down at Ethan.
The little boy was holding onto her coat.
Terrified.
Victoria crossed her arms.
"Honestly, Sarah, you need to stop treating him like a baby."
Something inside Sarah snapped.
"You are not his mother."
The words hit Victoria hard.
For the first time, her confident smile disappeared.
"I am his stepmother."
"No."
Sarah stepped closer.
"You are someone I trusted."
The silence between them was heavy.
Then Victoria whispered:
"You should be careful, Sarah."
Sarah narrowed her eyes.
"What does that mean?"
Victoria smiled again.
"It means maybe you don't know everything that happens in your own house."
Sarah felt a chill.
And it wasn't from the snow.
Because suddenly...
May you like
She realized Victoria wasn't afraid.
She was hiding something.
