CHAPTER 13 — THE SECRET IN THE OLD HOUSE

The courtroom went silent.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Everyone was looking at Ethan.
A four-year-old boy standing in the middle of a room full of adults, holding a truth that could destroy everything.
The judge leaned forward.
"Ethan, can you tell us what papers you mean?"
The little boy looked nervous.
Sarah immediately stood.
"Your Honor, he's just a child."
The judge nodded.
"I understand."
Then he looked at Ethan gently.
"You only have to answer if you want to."
Ethan looked at his mother.
Sarah didn't say anything.
She didn't need to.
Her eyes told him:
You are safe.
Ethan took a small breath.
"Victoria went into Mommy's office."
Sarah frowned.
"My office?"
Ethan nodded.
"She thought I was sleeping."
Victoria's face changed.
Just slightly.
But Sarah noticed.
"You were looking for something?" Sarah asked.
Victoria stayed quiet.
The judge looked at her.
"Mrs. Bennett?"
Victoria finally spoke.
"This is ridiculous."
But her voice wasn't as confident anymore.
Ethan continued.
"She found a box."
Sarah felt her heart race.
"What box, sweetheart?"
"The one Daddy left."
The room changed.
Because everyone knew Ethan's father had passed away years ago.
A box from him could mean anything.
Photos.
Letters.
Memories.
But Victoria was afraid.
And that told Sarah everything.
After the hearing ended, Sarah rushed home.
She searched through the old office.
Every drawer.
Every cabinet.
Every shelf.
Nothing.
Then Ethan walked in.
"Mommy?"
She turned.
"Where was the box, baby?"
He pointed.
"Behind the wall."
Sarah froze.
"Behind the wall?"
Ethan nodded.
"Daddy showed me before."
Sarah slowly walked toward the bookshelf.
She moved it.
Behind it was a small hidden compartment.
Her hands trembled as she opened it.
Inside was an old wooden box.
The box belonged to her husband.
Inside were documents.
A letter.
And a small flash drive.
Sarah sat down.
Her hands shaking, she opened the letter.
It was written by her husband before he died.
"Sarah,
If you are reading this, something happened.
I need you to know something.
I discovered someone close to us was trying to access Ethan's inheritance.
I don't know who I can trust.
But I know one thing.
If anything happens to me, protect our son.
The person behind this will not stop."
Sarah stopped reading.
Her eyes filled with tears.
Because her husband knew.
He knew someone was coming for Ethan.
She opened the flash drive.
A video appeared.
Her husband appeared on the screen.
Older.
Tired.
But alive.
"Sarah..."
Her breath caught.
"Please listen carefully."
The video continued.
"I found evidence that someone has been manipulating families for years."
He looked directly into the camera.
"The person responsible is Victoria Bennett."
Sarah covered her mouth.
The truth was finally coming out.
But then the video revealed something worse.
Her husband said:
"Victoria did not work alone."
The screen paused.
A name appeared.
Daniel Cross.
Sarah felt cold.
They had known each other before.
They had planned everything.
And then the video showed the final piece of evidence.
A recording.
A conversation.
Victoria's voice.
"We don't need the child."
A pause.
"Once the mother is gone, the money becomes easy."
Sarah's blood turned cold.
Because now she knew.
The truth.
The entire plan.

And she knew exactly what she had to do.
End it.
