CHAPTER 1 — THE LOCKED GLASS DOOR

The first thing he felt was the cold.
Not fear.
Not pain.
Not even the snow cutting into his little hands.
Just cold.
A freezing, cruel kind of cold that made a four-year-old boy realize something was terribly wrong.
"Mommy..."
Little Ethan Carter sat on the snowy ground outside his own house, his tiny fingers shaking as he pushed against the glass door.
"Please... open the door."
His voice was barely a whisper.
Inside the warm living room, his stepmother, Victoria, stood only a few feet away.
She could hear him.
She could see him.
But she didn't move.
The fire was burning in the fireplace. Soft music played in the background. The smell of expensive perfume filled the room.
Victoria looked perfect.
Her long red dress looked like something from a magazine. Her white fur coat cost more than most people’s monthly paycheck.
She looked like a woman who had everything.
But behind her beautiful smile was something much colder than the snow outside.
"Ethan, stop crying," she said calmly.
The little boy stared at her through the glass.
"Please... I'm sorry."
Victoria slowly walked toward the door.
For one second, Ethan’s eyes filled with hope.
Maybe she was going to open it.
Maybe she finally felt bad.
Maybe she remembered he was just a little boy.
But instead...
Click.
She locked the door.
Ethan froze.
"No..."
His little hand pressed harder against the glass.
"Please don't lock it."
Victoria leaned closer.
"You need to learn a lesson."
"A lesson?" Ethan cried. "I'm cold..."
"You always get what you want because people feel sorry for you."
His face crumbled.
"I'm not bad..."
Victoria rolled her eyes.
"Your mother spoiled you. She made you weak."
The little boy shook his head.
"My mommy loves me."
Something changed in Victoria’s expression.
A flash of anger crossed her face.
"Your mommy isn't here."
Those words hurt more than the freezing wind.
Because Ethan knew she was right.
His real mother, Sarah, wasn't supposed to come home until tomorrow.
She had trusted Victoria.
She had believed her son was safe.
She had no idea what was happening.
Ethan dropped to his knees in the snow.
"Please..."
His voice cracked.
"Please call my mommy."
Victoria turned around.
"No."
The boy started crying harder.
"Please!"
But Victoria walked away.
Slowly.
Deliberately.
Leaving him alone outside.
Ethan crawled closer to the door, trying to find warmth from the glass.
His lips were turning blue.
His tiny body was shaking uncontrollably.
Outside, the snow kept falling.
Inside, Victoria poured herself a glass of wine.
She looked through the window one more time.
Ethan was still there.
Still crying.
Still waiting.
And Victoria smiled.
"Maybe now you'll finally understand," she whispered.
But what she didn't know...
Was that someone was already driving toward the house.
Someone who knew Ethan better than anyone.
Someone who would never forgive what she was about to see.
Because Sarah Carter was coming home early.
May you like
And when she opened that front door...
Victoria's perfect little world was about to fall apart.
