CHAPTER 12 — THE FINAL TRAP

Victoria knew.
Sarah could feel it.
The moment she walked into the courtroom, Victoria looked different.
She wasn't nervous.
She wasn't scared.
She was confident.
Too confident.
Sarah sat beside her lawyer.
"She knows about Linda."
Her lawyer looked at her.
"How?"
"I don't know."
But Sarah knew one thing.
Victoria always seemed to be one step ahead.
The judge entered.
The hearing began.
Sarah presented everything.
The recordings.
The documents.
Linda's testimony.
The evidence against Daniel.
For the first time...
Victoria looked uncomfortable.
The judge looked at her.
"Mrs. Bennett, do you have a response?"
Victoria slowly stood.
"Yes."
She looked at Sarah.
And smiled.
"I do."
She handed a folder to her lawyer.
Sarah felt uneasy.
The lawyer opened it.
Then his face changed.
"What is it?"
He didn't answer.
The judge looked through the documents.
Sarah's stomach tightened.
"What are those?"
The judge looked up.
"Mrs. Carter..."
Sarah stood.
"Yes?"
"These documents claim you have a history of neglect."
The room went silent.
Sarah felt like the air disappeared.
"That's impossible."
Victoria looked down sadly.
"Sarah, I didn't want it to come to this."
Sarah stared at her.
"You created fake evidence."
Victoria shook her head.
"No."
Her voice became soft.
"I protected Ethan."
Sarah almost couldn't believe it.
The same woman who hurt him.
The same woman who locked him outside.
Was pretending to save him.
Then Victoria said something that made Sarah freeze.
"Ask Ethan."
Everyone turned.
Sarah looked confused.
"What?"
Victoria smiled.
"Ask him who he is afraid of."
Sarah looked toward the back of the courtroom.
Ethan was sitting with a social worker.
His eyes were filled with fear.
Sarah immediately stood.
"Ethan."
But the social worker stopped her.
"Please wait."
Victoria watched.
Waiting.
Hoping.
Sarah realized the trap.
She wanted Ethan scared.
She wanted him confused.
She wanted him to say something that could destroy Sarah.
But Victoria forgot one thing.
Ethan wasn't alone anymore.
Sarah looked at her son.
She didn't tell him what to say.
She didn't pressure him.
She simply smiled.
A small, gentle smile.
The same smile she gave him every night before bed.
And then...
Ethan stood.
The entire courtroom went silent.
The little boy walked slowly forward.
He looked at the judge.
Then he looked at Victoria.
His tiny voice shook.
But his words were clear.
"She is lying."
Victoria's smile disappeared.
Ethan continued.
"She always lies."
Sarah covered her mouth.
Because she knew.
This was the moment everything changed.
But then Ethan said one more thing.
Something nobody expected.
Something that made Victoria's face turn completely white.
"Because I saw what she did to Daddy's papers."
The courtroom froze.
Sarah looked confused.
"What papers?"
Ethan pointed at Victoria.
"The papers she was looking for."
Victoria stood up.
"No."
But it was too late.
May you like
Because Ethan had just revealed a secret...
That even Sarah didn't know existed.
