CHAPTER 11 — THE REAL MOTIVE

Sarah read the document three times.
She wanted to believe she misunderstood.
She wanted to believe there was some explanation.
But there wasn't.
The document was clear.
Victoria wasn't fighting for Ethan.
She was fighting for money.
A trust fund.
A family inheritance.
Money that Ethan's father had left behind before he died.
Sarah looked at Linda.
"She knew about this?"
Linda nodded.
"Victoria found out after your husband passed away."
Sarah's hands tightened around the paper.
"My son was just a child."
"I know."
"She used him."
Linda looked down.
"Yes."
For years, Sarah thought Victoria was jealous.
Cruel.
Maybe even hateful.
But this was something worse.
She didn't see Ethan as a person.
She saw him as a key.
A way to unlock a fortune.
Sarah walked to Ethan's room.
He was playing quietly.
Laughing with his toy.
He had no idea adults had been fighting over him.
No idea someone had tried to use him.
Sarah sat beside him.
"Mommy?"
She smiled.
"Yeah, baby?"
"Are we going to be okay?"
That question broke her.
Because he was four years old.
He shouldn't know what fear felt like.
He shouldn't worry about losing his mother.
She hugged him.
"We're going to be okay."
But Sarah knew something.
Being okay wasn't enough.
Victoria needed to be stopped.
That afternoon, Sarah and her lawyer prepared everything.
The new evidence.
The recordings.
The documents.
Linda's statement.
Everything.
Then the phone rang.
It was the police.
Sarah answered.
"Mrs. Carter?"
"Yes?"
"We need you to come to the station."
Her heart jumped.
"What happened?"
There was a pause.
Then:
"We found something connected to Daniel Cross."
Sarah arrived twenty minutes later.
The officer placed a file on the table.
"We investigated his background."
Sarah opened it.
Her eyes moved across the pages.
Daniel wasn't just Victoria's brother.
He had a criminal history.
Fraud.
Identity theft.
Manipulation.
And then she saw the last page.
A recent charge.
"Attempted child endangerment?"
The officer nodded.
Sarah looked up.
"Why wasn't he arrested?"
"Because the witness disappeared."
Sarah felt cold.
"What witness?"
The officer opened another file.
A picture fell onto the table.
Sarah picked it up.
It was a woman.
A woman she had never seen before.
The officer spoke quietly.
"She was the first person who accused Victoria of doing exactly what she's doing now."
Sarah stared at the picture.
"What happened to her?"
The officer looked serious.
"She vanished."
A terrible feeling entered Sarah's chest.
Because suddenly she understood.
Victoria didn't just destroy families.
May you like
She had a pattern.
And Sarah was the next target.
