CHAPTER 8 — THE FIGHT FOR ETHAN

Sarah read the message again and again.

Her hands shook.

Not because she was scared for herself.

Because she was scared for Ethan.

That was the only thing Victoria had never understood.

A mother could survive almost anything.

But threatening her child?

That was a different kind of war.

Sarah immediately called her lawyer.

"This is no longer about custody," she said.

Her voice was cold.

"This is about protecting my son."

The next morning, the legal battle began.

Victoria arrived at court wearing a perfect suit.

Her hair was flawless.

Her expression was calm.

She looked like someone who had done nothing wrong.

Sarah hated that.

Because she knew the truth.

Behind that smile was someone who had hurt a child.

The judge looked through the documents.

"Mrs. Bennett, you are requesting emergency custody?"

Victoria nodded.

"Yes, Your Honor."

"On what grounds?"

Victoria looked toward Sarah.

"Because I believe Ethan is not safe with his biological mother."

Sarah almost laughed.

Almost.

But then Victoria continued.

"Sarah is emotionally unstable."

The room went silent.

Sarah looked at her.

"You have got to be kidding me."

The judge looked serious.

"Mrs. Carter, please control yourself."

Sarah took a breath.

She knew exactly what Victoria wanted.

She wanted anger.

She wanted mistakes.

She wanted Sarah to look dangerous.

So Sarah stayed calm.

Her lawyer stood.

"We have evidence contradicting these claims."

He placed the recording on the table.

The judge listened.

Victoria's voice filled the courtroom.

"If you tell your mother, nobody will believe you."

Victoria's face changed.

Only for a second.

But Sarah saw it.

Fear.

Real fear.

The judge looked at Victoria.

"Can you explain this?"

Victoria opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Then Daniel stepped forward.

Sarah recognized him immediately.

The man from the snow.

"I can explain."

Everyone turned.

Daniel walked toward the witness area.

Sarah felt her heart drop.

Because she knew this was exactly what Victoria wanted.

A new story.

A new lie.

Daniel looked at the judge.

"My sister was trying to help this family."

Sarah stared.

"Help?"

Daniel looked at her.

"Victoria was concerned about Ethan."

Sarah clenched her fists.

"She locked him outside in freezing weather."

Daniel shook his head.

"That is not what happened."

Sarah couldn't believe it.

The evidence was right there.

The recording.

The documents.

Everything.

But Daniel smiled.

And then he pulled out a folder.

"I have proof."

The courtroom became silent.

Daniel placed the folder on the table.

Inside were photos.

Videos.

Reports.

Sarah's face went pale.

Because the first photo showed Ethan crying.

But the date on the picture was impossible.

It was taken before Victoria ever entered their lives.

The judge looked confused.

Sarah looked terrified.

Because she realized something.

Someone had been creating evidence against her.

For a long time.

And now...

They were about to use it to take her son away.
